Well, I can't tell youanything on Townsend (Towson) but I can tell you who he ISN'T, perhaps.
He does not appear to be in the family of William m. Mary Butler of Prince William who moved to Culpeper in the 1790s.Most of the people listed in the late 1700s-early 1800's marriage records in "Genealogical Gleanings" are from that family with the exception of Elijah m. Catherine Watts in 1798. I rely on the family tree of Jon Stallard, an excellent historian of this family for this info. This family is, I believe DNA Family B on the Butler DNA site.
Towson or the name Townsend in any way(which may be a mother's maiden name) isn't listed in the wills of John Butler, d. 1757, Walter Butler, d. 1772 or John d. 1778.I haven't seen Townsend or anything similar in the land records I have found. There is no one by that name in the Revolutionary War pension records I have found for William Butler, b. 1754.Neither John b. 1762 or Benjamin b. 1765 have this name in what I know of their trees, and they were both gone from Culpeper soon after they came back from the War.
My John and Benjamin are both members of the DNA H Butlers, whose most documented families are Edmund "E" Butler and Zachariah Butler. The family of Edmund "E" has no one of the name listed or associated with them. Neither does Zachariah, but documentation of the origins of his family are not as good.
I have been following the emigration and settlement patterns of Edmund "E" and a man James who came over 3 years before Edmund in 1703 .Both James and Edmund came via the same Irish merchant, Francis Moore and presumably initially received part of the land grants given Moore for "transportation" of his settlers.Moore's lands, as well as a group of earlier Butlers were directly to the upper Rappahannock River area in what is now Caroline and apparently Orange and Culpeper.I have a number of names of Butlers in those areas over the years between 1703 and 1765, but no one with the name Townsend/Towson associated with them.
So, no, I haven't seen that name associated with Butlers so farbefore the date your Townsend Butler would have been born OTHER than a Bladen County NC tax list in 1763 which contains both Butlers and Townsends. I don't know much about the NC Butlers, but the names are there.
I am still finding new Butlers in the area daily that have not been widely documented so if I see him or a Townsend associated with the family, I will come back here and let you know.Meanwhile if you can locate a male Butler of that line who hasn't tested for DNA I would encourage them to do that.Mostly it has helped me exclude a lot of Butlers, but that is better than nothing, because there are 2 or 3 different bloodline Butlers living in the same counties at the same time (and with the same name sometimes!) as my Butlers.
