Hey all! Not that I enjoy further muddying the waters, BUT...

A couple notes as I work on this line for the next book.

William Butler who married Mary ?? was probably the SON of Joshua Butler and Grace Page NOT his grandson;

1) William's oldest son Joshua married Nancy Embry (daughter of Robert and Ann) in 1769, so he was born no later than 1748, more likely 1745. If Wm was born in 1735, he'd only be 10 when his eldest son was born.

2) To have a child around 1745, William would have been born more like 1725. In Joshua's will of 1724, William was the last of 5 children, all of whom are expressly stated as having been under 16 at the time. Math and biology tell us that this William was born between 1720 and 1725

3) A man born between 1720 and 1725 would be marriagable age around 1740-1745, which is when Joseph was born.

4) In the 1775 Fauquier Tax Lists, William pays taxes for his younger sons Sprncer and Charles who are in that year between 16 and 21. Three years later in 1778, Spencer is over 21 because he is paying his own taxes. We can derive from this that Spencer and Charles were born around 1755 and 1757 respectively, which also fits with a marriage date for Wm and Mary of around 1745.

5) Wm and Mary's next to youngest son Benjamin was born in April of 1769, which also fits the model.

Now, a popular theory is Wm who married Mary was a son of John Butler and Elizabeth Beach. While it does look like this John was probably Joshua's son John, and that he probably did marry Alexander Beach's daughter Elizabeth, this couple didn't marry until around 1749, so any children born to this marriage would be much to young to be our William.

John and Elizabeth had a son William, but he is a generation too young to be ours. In the 1766 Fauqiuer Tax List, this John pays taxes for his 432 acres and pays a tithe for William, who is between 16 and 21 at the time. In 1775, William is over 21 and paying his own tithe. Next to him is his father John, who pays a tithe for his younger son John Jr. who in that year is between 16 and 21. John mentions in a later deed his "son William" who built a mill on his land in Deep Run and who no longer resides there. That is this William who was born about 1750. As nice a coincidence as it would be for this to be the William who moves to Culpeper, it just doesn't work. John Butler who married Elizabeth Beach seems ot be the same generation as William who married Mary, which makes me believe that the later fellow is John's brother, and Joshua's son.

Anyway, I'm still working through all this, but so far the land transactions bear it all out.
