William Butler (d. 1826), Westmoreland County, VA

Hello,

I am writing to see if anyone has any information on a William Butler (bef. 1770 – 1826). He lived and died in Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, VA. Over the years, I have learned more about this individual yet I have been unable to identify his parents and siblings. Below are the facts that I have so far. Unfortunately, there are too many William Butlers living at this time in Westmoreland County to be sure which one I am looking at.

William Butler was married to Alice (Elcey) Butler (d/o Christopher Butler) on Sept. 11, 1786 in Westmoreland County, VA. They had the following children:

•       William Augustine married to Susan Pope Tiffey on Dec 14, 1829. William Augustine referred to himself as William A. Butler in court and census records.
•       Wesley married to Frances Crask
•       Alice – single as of the death of William Butler
•       Elizabeth - single as of the death of William Butler
•       Eliza married to John Crenshaw.

Below is his will probated on 24 Jul, 1826 from the Westmoreland County courthouse.

BUTLER, WILLIAM, [no will date], 24 Jul, 1826. Bed, furniture, yoke of oxen to heirs of departed son Wesley; furniture, cow and calf to dau. Eliza Crenshaw; daughter Elizabeth; bed to son William; dau. Alice; land to son William with encumbrances; son William exr.

I believe the will below to reference the William Butler I am looking for. There is some speculation that William may have been a cousin of his wife Alice from the use of “nephew” below. But then again, this could be another William. The Butlers in Westmoreland County, VA were known for naming a child in each generation “William”

BUTLER, JANE, 5 Mar. 1791; 27 Mar. 1792. Cattle to sister Eliz. Briscoe; Eliz. dau. of William Butler; niece Elcey Butler rest of stock and at her death to her children Elis. and Wesley Butler; nephew William Butler exr.

This is Sarah Butler’s will. Sarah is the sister of Jane Butler above. It also refers to Elcey Butler (William’s wife)

BUTLER, SARAH, 4 Nov. 1784; 26 Apr. 1785. Bro. Lawrence Butler 1 negro; niece Elcey Butler 1 negro boy; sister Jane Butler a negro woman for life then to children of bro.Christopher Butler; sister Joice 1 mare.

Any help is appreciated.

Dan
