I've read various information on the James Vann family which appears to differ from what I have in my records. I'm trying to determine which is correct. I welcome any input. I've seen several posts indicating Capt. James Vann married 1. Mary Robinson and then 2. Mary Butler Tatum. The Capt. part doesn't match what I have found so far. My records indicate the James Vann who married Mary Robinson was the great grandson of Capt. William Vann. But he was not the Capt. James Vann associated with the Cherokee. Did he serve in the Civil War and reach rank of Capt.? If anyone has information on whether or not he was called Capt. James Vann, I would appreciate knowing it. I've found no records so far indicating such. Plus two of his children were born during the Civil War timeframe. I've read posts by others stating Mary Robinson Vann died of an illness contracted while assisting a physician in 1862 or 1864 with patients. He would have married Mary Jane Butler after 1862 or 1864. Unclear if it was prior to 1870 or 1880, depending if the 1870 census listing his wife as Sarah is incorrect. I have the following: James Vann b. abt 1822-28 Sampson Co. d. after 1880 & before 1900 in Cumberland Co.(Fayetteville, NC) s/o Enoch Vann & Rebecca Tatum (Sampson Co, NC) gs/o John Vann & Sarah Sheperd/Sheppard (Sampson Co) ggs/o Capt. William Vann (Chowan Co, NC> Duplin Co> Sampson Co, NC) & Phoebe James Vann--Census records indicate birth years ranging from 1822-1827. James married 1. Mary Robinson before 1850 Sampson Co., NC 2. Mary Jane BUTLER after 1862-64 but before 1870 if she is the wife listed as Sarah in the 1870 census She would have been married 1st to James R Tatum *found one record indicating a James R.Tatum died during Civil War in Maryland in 1862. If that is the correct James Tatum, it is logical that Mary could be the second wife and the name on the 1870 census is incorrect for James' wife. 1850 Census: Sampson Co., NC James age 28 wife Mary (Robinson) age 19 children: Sarah age 2 George age 2/12 *Junius possibly* 1860 Census Sampson Co., NC Taylor's Bridge James age 34 Wife: Mary (Robinson) age 28 Children: Sarah age 12 Junius age 9 Thomas age 6 Claudius age 4 Festus age 4 Virginia age 2 1870 Census Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., NC James age 43 butcher wife: Sarah (??Mary Butler Tatum instead???) age 36 keeping house Children: Junius age 19 farm hand (child of Mary Robinson) Thomas age 17 farm hand (child of Mary Robinson) Augustus age 14 farm hand (child of Mary Robinson) Thadeus age 14 farm hand (name difficult to read) (child of Mary Robinson) Virginia age 12 at home (child of Mary Robinson) Enoch age 10 at home (child of Mary Robinson) I age 8 at home (probably Ida Tatum shown on 1880 census) *name might read Isadore, Isabella (hard to read)* Julius age 6 at home (probably Julius Tatum on 1880 census) Josephine age 4 at home Mary age 2 at home 1880 census Cumberland Co., NC James age 53 wife: Mary JT (Mary Butler Tatum) age 35 Children: Enoc J. age 18 farmer Josephine C age 14 at school Mary age 11 at school WCT (or WGT) age 8 at school Neill A age 7 at school Clarence A age 4 at home Edwin (H?) age 3 at home Ida L. Aug. 1878 age 22 marked over with 21 *** Ages differ by 36 years, yet birth year difference of 30 years. If the 36 years is correct, Mary would have been born abt 1843. That would make her true age closer to the same year recorded in the 1870 census for James' wife Sarah, another indicator of error on wife's name in 1870 census.**** Residence: Hillsboro St. Cross Creek division Living next door to her stepdaughter, Virginia Vann Branch 1910 Census Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., NC Cross Creek Hillsboro St. Mary J Vann age 65 11 children 7 living boarder in home of Cleveland & Estelle Collie, next door to her stepdaughter, Virginia Vann Branch 1920 January 20th Death Certificate for Mary Jane Vann widowed, living on Hillsboro St, Fayetteville, NC age: about 78 (would put birth about 1842 buried: Fayetteville, NC on Jan. 20, 1920 Informant: JR Vann (either stepson or grandson) ***Was there a mistake with the name of the wife on the 1870 census? Julius and Ida are listed as Vann children on the 1870 census. James' wife is listed as Sarah. I have found no record other than the census for 1870 identifying him as being married to a Sarah. Ida Tatum Vann's (married Junius R. Vann) death certificate lists her parents as James R Tatum and Mary Jane Butler Julis Lilly Tatum's death certificate lists his parents as Richardson Tatum and Mary Butler. If this is the case, since both of those children are listed with James Vann in 1870, would Mary have been his wife then instead of the Sarah listed on the census? I have 2 photos found in my great grandmother's (Katie Louise Branch Rhodes) photo album that I would like to share with others connected to the James Vann family above. The album might have initially belonged to her elder sister, Callie Belle Branch Hilburn. They were the daughters of Virginia Ruth Vann Branch and William McNeal Branch. Their grandparents were James Vann and Mary Robinson Vann. One photo I believe is of James Vann and 2 of his daughters. If it is James, it would have been taken prior to 1900. If not, possibly it is of one of the older sons, but the man looks too old to be one of the sons. The other possibly is another of his children with a spouse and possibly a honeymoon or vacation trip. It was taken at an ostrich farm in NC. I am unable to identify the people in the photo, but it was mailed to MJ Vann in Fayetteville, NC in 1915. Thanks in advance. If you are connected and would like to see the photos, please email me at ncgensearcher@hotmail.com. Susan Notify Administrator about this message?
