James W. Butler was educated in the schools of Glendive, MT. He began working on ranches and was self-supporting at age 13. For 13 years he worked on ranches, saving his wages to invest in livestock and in time became a rancher himself. Mr. Butler homesteaded 12 miles south of Lambert, MT, and developed a large cow ranch and farm. He was in partnership in Butler Brothers, with his brother, Ed, and at their height had a thousand head of cattle. Encroachment of settlers led them to retire from the cattle business in 1915. They still raised Percheron horses for market.
On 18 Feb 1899, Glendive, MT, James W. Butler married Miss Eliza Banber, born 1874, Westmoreland Co., PA, daughter of John Banber, born in England in 1841, and Mary Jane Ralph. John Banber was an an early settler of Glendive, MT.
Butler children: James Howard and Mary.
