Boteler and Butler are indeed the same name, just different spellings. Boteler is just the old English spelling for the person who makes the wine bottles wheras Butler is the wine steward. The Butler(Boteler) surname was created when Theobald Fitzwalter was made the First Chief Butler of Ireland. This family has also used Fitzwalter and de Clare and are indeed descendants of the Dukes of Normandy.
