Fred,
This is interesting information and I am glad to get it. I know almost nothing about James Grigsby Butler, but he is the first child mentioned (identified with his full name) in the will of his father, Thomas Butler, signed 6 Mar 1816, proved 11 Mar 1816 (Edgefield Estates box 6, pkg 179).
I have never seen the name Hugovein, but Sampson Butler (1841-1935) was certainly named at least in part for his uncle Sampson Hale Butler or his great uncle Sampson Butler. In the will of Thomas Butler, uncle Sampson, son of Thomas Butler is listed without a middle name.
I need to check my files to see where the middle name of Hale is documented. In his obit and on his tombstone, Sampson H. Butler (abt 1801-1848) is listed only with a middle initial.
What are the sources for your information, especially the middle name of Sampson (1841-1935)?
