Shannon hi,
Well no matter who I corresponded with it will be hard to change my opinion about the study right now. There are just two many variations (mutations - different groups) in our study for it to be a big boon for genealogy.I suppose there can be something to say about the numbers in the study. It is obvious to me that the more people there are the better the results get.
What I am dealing with is only the last 400 years or so of history.Connecting the various different groups together given the known history and various family histories seems to be the difficult part.
I still have a brickwall trying to discover the parentage of my James Butler b. 1740 of Isle of Wight.Harold and Shari still have a brickwall concerning their Peter Butler b. 1710 of GreenbriarWe know that our common ancestor is prior to each of them but that goal is still unreachable without other documentation.
I do have a theory based on a timeline that fits my brickwall but without other documentation it is only a theory.I am totally convinced that 900-1000 years ago, there is a common ancestor for all of the Butler surname.
I'm just not convinced the DNA would mutate as much as we are seeing through natural causes.
Never-the-less, I do know more than I did four years ago because of the DNA project.Shari was a big help to me in my research for my family line.Without the DNA study I would not have had that. Before the DNA study, I only had knowledge going back to my great grandfather. The DNA study along with other sources such as RootsWeb and the Mormon IGI I've put my line together as far back as 1740 and I have a solid theory on beyond that based on the timeline and history.
I am interested in the results of your further testing of the DNA.It would certainly help to upgrade the markers to be sure.Like you said, we could forget the Null value for DSY 439 if the others fit.
