Hello to all,
Don't know where this will lead, but want to share and maybe it will spark something.I went yesterday to Charleston Library Society, third oldest library in US. Building was too cold to stay very long, but I will go back. All I looked at so far was indexes and of Historical Society and there are about 150 volumes.I did look at a few possible connections and the thing of most interest I will share.Part of what I am writing comes also from wills of Westmoreland and then I have compared to some of info from sites from Internet.
In Wills of Westmoreland, from internet:John Lancelot died 1712. " To cousin John Lancelot my two plantations one formerly my brother William's and the other that which Gilbert Atwood now lives on, but his mother Jane Lancelot to live on it during her life; in case John Lancelot dies then to his sister my cousin Jane Simmons failing which to my cousin William Butler ***: to my wife Mary remainder of estate, brother William's children, my cousin to be kept in school until he can read Bible and cousin Jane the same."
In Wills of Westmoreland, from internet: (note very next entry) Butler, John 28 Jan 1712 also this is same date as John Lancelot above. " George Purvis, William Cutler, Richard Coggin: wife Catherine and my children; wife and brother William Butler exrs, eldest son Thomas, sons John and James, my brother James Butler."
From sites on Internet, there are numerous. Thomas III Butler married Ann Lancelot. Most entries I have copied give son as James Butler who married Katherine Stuart and later Elizabeth Whitson. It is from this James Butler that most attribute the ancestry of James Butler who married Mary Simpson and was in SC.
Unfortunately, I did not list exact ref on what I am now going to write, but I will get it next trip.
Elizabeth Elliott b 1707 m 1723 Thomas Butler, later Robert D'Arquis and then Robert Yonge.Robert died 1751.Off the Archives, I find that Elizabeth Elliott married 1723 Thomas Butler, and m 1750 Robert Yonge.Have not looked for other marriage date for Robert D'Arquis.
Children of Elizabeth Elliot are:
!) Thomas
2) Mary married 1742 Richard Wright, and 1747 Elisha Butler
3) Ann d 1745
4) William baptized 1734
5) Elizabeth baptized 1734
6) Sarah baptized 1737
Note there is a William Butler who died 1768 married to Elizabeth inf from SC Archives.
From Inf from The Baker Book 1994, arthur Claude Baker on Wills of Westmoreland finds a Thomas Butler whose will probated in 1714 listed a daughter Elizabeth Baker, granddaughter Ann.In his will he gave land to his son, Wm Butler, James Butler and daughter Elizabeth Baker, John Baker Executor,John Baker and James Butler inventoried his possessions.Grandsons Thomas Butler, son of John Butler given 200 acres.John and James Butler were also listed as sons of John Butler.
Note there is a marriage of an Elizabeth Elliott to William Butler in 1738. This is not the same Elizabeth who married Thomas, or so I believe. Could it be the William Butler son of Thomas who was baptized in 1734? He is the child ofThomas Butler and Elizabeth Elliott listed above that I am referring to.For the names of Elliott from the Archives, I find William Elliott, Charles Elliott and Thomas Elliott all in SC about 1696.
Also regard Mary, the child of Thomas Butler and Elizabeth Elliott she by the reference I had found was married 1742 to Richard Wright, and in 1747 to Elisha Butler. In 1731 there are land transactions for Thomas Butler and the name of Elisha Butler is on the abstract. In 1745, Elisha Butler, and Thomas Wright exors and Mary Wright exix of Richard Wright.
Next is a confusing entry, not that so much of genealogy is full of twists and turns, It is from the Archives and is 1738 for Elisha Butler of Colleton County, and his wife Elizabeth and it lists son William Elliott, and if he should die without heirs, then to the Daughters Elizabeth Elliott and Mary Elliott.Could this Elisha be the same who married Mary Butler daughter of Thomas Butler and Mary Elliott, that marriage in 1747.Or could there have been a brother of Thomas named Elisha who had married an Elizabeth Elliott who had children previously?Any thoughts, comments or clues?
In 1733 there is an Elizabeth Butler wife of Thomas Butler with renunciation to Edward Simpson. There is entry in Archives, which gives name of wife of Edward as Sarah. Also, in 1737 is another transaction of Thomas Butler with Edward Simpson Lot 26 of Charlestown.
Of the name of Simpson in SC, there seems to be a William first transactions about 1733 and an action in 1770 that shows a James Simpson and a John Simpson as exors of William Simpson. Comment: If James Butler who married Mary Simpson is a brother to Thomas Butler, then it might make sense that Edward Simposn and Thomas Butler would be on same entry.
Of the name of Elliott in Archives, lots of transactions.Elizabeth Elliott may have been well heeled.Of course, no idea who her parents might be at this point.
If you are not aware, you can get to SC Archives on line by typing in SC Archives and going to online genealogy then to a search page.Sure beats going to the Archives in Columbia.
Do not know how any of this will help, maybe our ancestors, those of Enoch and Seaman are a part of this family, please pass on to anyone who could be of help the info provided.I must comment that although somehow I got the info that Enoch Butler was married to Elizabeth Grigsby, I have yet to find anything that helps me make that connection.Since I do not think our ancestor is the James who married Mary Simpson, I think he could be the son or grandson of one of the sons of Thomas Butler and Elizabeth Elliott.
Thanks in advance for any thing one might add or any research you might do and share that relates to this.
