Hi Bud!
I was wondering what happened to you. Thanks for the tip on your tree.I did look up my people but they weren't there.I know the following is long, but hopefully it is clear and makes sense. Do you have a clue on any of this? What do you know about Butler's of Licking Co. Ohio who migrated from Vermont?Do you have any leads on Butler's from Rutland Co Vermont?
This is what I have gathered on my Butler Line:
September 2, 1858 Shelby County Ohio: Marriage License issued to Benjamin Butler, of Ohio and Caroline Gano of NJ.It is written “vouched for by gent’s father”.Marriage occurred same day, performed by A.D. Young, JP
They had only one child: Richard Raymond (?) Butler
Richard Butler was born in September 1859, Shelby Co. Ohio
Other Butler Marriages in Shelby Co. Ohio:

Ludlow S. Butler to Albina R. Wyatt on March 1, 1859 It is written “gent’s father present, gave consent personally”
Other Gano Marriages in Shelby Co. Ohio:
Robert S. Gano to Sarah Ellen Goble January 1, 1857
John H. Gano to Henrietta Young, license issued October 20, 1860 –never married

Wife and 4 female children present
Hh # 318 Nelson Butler 59, farmer, VT

Washington, Shelby Co. Ohio 1870 census:

Springfield, Clark Co. Ohio 1880 census:

Springfield, Clark Co. Ohio 1900 census:

Chrissie b. December 1882 (listed as shoe trimmer)
John b. December 1886
Kitty b. July 1888
Joy b. May 1895
Mary b. November 1896
Raymond b. July 1899
*Alvin Butler, uncle, b. January 1848 Ohio, father b. VT mother b. IN*
1900 Springfield Ohio
Caroline Butler is listed as living with William Gano, her nephew
Because Uncle Alvin Butler is listed with Richard and family in 1900, I went back searching for Alvin born in 1848 and found that he is the youngest son of Nelson and Mary Butler.I found that aside from Ludlow and Alden Butler there was an eldest son named Benona/Benoni/Ben…. Who happens to be the exact age as my “Benjamin”, who according to Alvin Butler in 1900 would have been a brother. Can I safely assume my Benjamin/Ben is the oldest son of Nelson and Mary Butler?
Harrison, Licking Co. Ohio 1850 census:
Nelson Butler, 38, b. VT
Mary A Butler, 33, b. ??
Benona Butler, 15
Ludlow Butler, 12
Alden Butler, 9
Louisa Butler, 7
Alvin Butler, 3
Mary Butler, 70, b. VT
Dexter Sherman, 59, b. VT
Harrison, Licking Co. Ohio 1840 census:
The Nelson Butler household has
2 males 0-5; 1 male 20-30; 1 male 40-50; 1 female 20-30; 1 female 60-70
This fits the ages as follows:
Benona 5 & Ludlow 2; Nelson 28; Dexter Shurman 49; Mary Butler 60
Am I making too big a jump?
When I looked for Dexter Shurman/Sherman born in Vermont around 1790 I found him in Pittsford Township, Rutland Co. Vermont as the son of Joshua and Amey Sherman. This couple also has a daughter Mary listed as being born in 1779, eleven years older than Dexter, which also fits the 1840 and 1850 census.Interestingly Mary and Dexter have an older brother named Benoni/Beuoni Sherman.Could Mary have named her oldest son after her brother?
The other thing about this Sherman family is that many of them did relocate to Licking Co. Ohio.Japhet Sherman and Shubael Sherman are buried in Gaffield Cemetery in Licking Co. Ohio.Mary Butler, the wife of Nelson Butler is buried there too.I have to check to see if Mary Butler, his mother is in Gaffield, I think she is.
How can I find out if my Benjamin Butler is aka as Benona Butler therefore the son of Nelson Butler of VT?
How can I find out if Mary Sherman married a Butler and is therefore the mother of Nelson Butler?
If Mary Sherman is Mary Butler, the mother of Nelson Butler and Nelson Butler is listed as being born in Vermont, then Mary Sherman would have married her husband, unknown Butler, in Vermont also.I am speculating the Butler – Sherman marriage would have taken place between 1795 and 1805.
Please let me know what you think. Thank you, Jean
