Hello Jim!
I'm excited that you found this forum too!!!
It's so little to go on but better than nothing....I just read your
grandmother's story in genforum about the 4 Butkus brothers.I am
searching for information on my gr-grandfather, GEORGE BUTKUS...who was
married to CATHERINE (WHITE) BUTKUS.I don't know where or when they
arrived in the U.S. but George worked in the coal mines in Shenandoah,
PA in 1893 when my grandmother was born.I believe Catherine died
before 1907 and George moved to Chicago, IL in 1907 with either a new
wife and his children or just his children and then acquired a wife
Mary.I found a death certificate for a GEORGE BUTKUS who died in 1923
at "approximately 50 years old" in Chicago, IL which is the ONLY George
BUTKUS I've found who was nearly the right age to be my grandmother's
father.Grandma ran away from home in 1910 at the age of 17.For years
I'd been told she might've run away because her father died and her
mother remarried and she didn't like the step-father but evidence, if it
is correct, shows that her MOTHER is the one who died and perhaps she
could not get along with her step-mother????In any event, she is shown
in a STAMPF family bible in 1910 in Brooklyn, NY as having lost or had a
child and I believe the child died...as she was only known to have had
children beginning in 1914 with Fred STAMPF in Brooklyn, NY.
I've been in touch with a woman (I have to check on names to be sure)
who had extensive BUTKUS information and had two BUTKUS brothers who
married two WHITE sisters in Waukeegan (sp), Illinois.I think my
George could have been their uncle...imagine if he married the WHITE
girls' aunt or cousin or older sister or who knows....but I haven't been
able to learn anything more. This lady knew there was a George BUTKUS
in the line but could not find any further information on him.Talk
about frustrating!!!!!
Do you know anything more about your BUTKUS
brothers?GEORGE BUTKUS is said to have been
Lithuanian, immigrated from Russia and spoke
Polish. The death certificate I found says his parents were born
in KILONIA, LITHUANIA.
Joanie
