Lula Butcher Dugger daughter of Joseph Perry Butcher

There appears to be several submissions to Rootsweb regarding Joseph Perry Butcher being married to Emma Rebecca Wiley and by whom he had a daughter Lula who married Ethan Allen Dugger.

While researching my Pruitt family of which two Butcher brothers (Isaac and Irwin) married into, I have found that the information on Lula's mother is in error and should be corrected by those who have this error. The proof is as follows:

On 25 Feb 1875 in Macoupin Co IL Joseph Perry Butcher married Martha J Range. By 1880 Joseph Perry Butcher is married a second time to a woman by the name of Electa and still residing in Macoupin Co. At this time there are two daughters in the household - Lula born born Nov/Dec 1877 and Bertha M born Jan 1880. It's hard to decipher who the mother of each girl is but the 1900 census confirms that Martha J Range is Lula's mother and Bertha M is the oldest of Electa's children by Joseph Perry Butcher.

In the 1900 census this Butcher family is residing in Butler Co KS. Electa is now referred to as Leota and is claiming that she has given birth to 10 children of which 9 are living. Those living are all in the census at home as follows -

Bertha M - Jan 1880
Ham E - Aug 1882
Charles (Sr) - Nov 1884
Cora E - Aug 1889
Ida M - Jan 1892
Ira (twin) - Oct 1895
Iva (twin) - Oct 1895
Wesley Freeman - Apr 1897
Leo E - Nov 1898

The 10th child most likely was born in the period between Charles and Cora. All of these children were born in IL, most likely Macoupin Co.

Another child Calvan was born in 1902 in KS, most like Butler Co.

Either shortly after Calvan's birth or in a few years but before 1910, Electa/Leota died. Joseph Perry Butcher is back in Macoupin Co IL listed as a widower with the younger 6 children (Ida, Ira, Iva, Wesley, Leo and Calvan) living with him.

Lula Butcher Dugger did not go to Kansas. She remained in Macoupin Co where she is found living in 1900 with her widowed aunt Susan Steidley. It is definitely known that Susan's maiden was Range.

Verna Kaster has posted information about the Range family at Rootswebs. In her information she has that Jefferson Range and his wife the former Elizabeth Hall were the parents of several children which included two daughters - Susan and Martha. She has Susan's marriage as being to Samuel Rowland Steidley on 7 April 1864 in Macoupin Co IL. Samuel was the son of Joseph Barr Steidley and and his wife the former Elvira W Rowland.

Between the census data and the Range family information it is very clear to see that the mother of Joseph Perry Butcher's daughter Lula was the former Martha J Range.

As for Joseph Perry Butcher's marriage to Emma Rebecca Wiley, I cannot find any evidence to show that he was married to her. If he was, it had to be for a short time between the 1910 census and his death in 1916.
