Hi John,

Lydia wasn't a Bushrod. Her mother, Elizabeth, married Thomas Bushrod. Lydia's uncle was a Capt Farlow, but don't know whether brother of her father or mother. Lydia had a sister, Jane, who married John Scarsbrook. Both the Bushrods and the Chismans were heavily mixed up in Bacon's Rebellion. Lydia's husband, Edmund, died while in prison, afterwards:

"After Bacon's death he (Edmund) was captured by Robert Beverley in York River. When he was arraigned before Berkeley, and was asked 'why he had engaged in Bacon's designs,' his brave young wife took all the blame on herself and besought the Governor 'to hang her and pardon him.' The Governor retorted with an indecent reproach, but Chisman cheated the gallows by dying in prison 'of feare, of griefe or bad usage.'"

Edmund and Lydia had only one son who died young, John, as can be seen by the following court case. Edmund did have a brother, Thomas, whose son, Thomas, married Elizabeth Reade. There is also a record in the parish register that a Lydia Chisman was 'killed in the thunder,' which no doubt was an unmarried daughter of Lydia and Edmund, as Lydia married Thomas Harwood after Edmund died.
Hope this will help clear up a few things for you.
