THE WILL OF JOHN BUSHROT, HUSBANDSMAN OF SHERBOURNE, DORSET 1590

In the name of God amen the seaventeene daye of Marche in the twoe and thirtithe year of the raigne of our soveraigne lady Elizabethe by the grace of god Quene of England, France and Ireland Defender of the faithe. I, John Bushrot of Sherbourne in the countie of Dorset, husbandman beinge sicke in bodie but perfect of remembraunce, thanks be given unto Allmightie god, do make and ordeyne this my last will and testamente in manner and forme followinge, that is to saie.

First I do bequeathe into the hands of the Allmightie my soule which he of his … goodness gave unto me when as he fashioned me in my mothers wombe. And as for my bodie I comend yt to the earthe from whence yt came knowinge that in the laste daye I shall receyve yt againe perfect and ymmortall like to the glorious bodie of Jesus Christe.

Imprime I give unto my sonne John twoe Acres of wheate, twoe acres of meslame, two acres of barley, two acres of Dredge , my olde Wayne with furniture for the same, a litle …. , a featherbed which was my fathers, tenne sheep, two platters, twoe pottingeres, twoe sawcers, a cawldron that was my fathers, a silver spoone and all my wearing apparrell savinge my beste coate to be delyvered unto hym within three years next after my decease. But yf my wife Margery whome I will make my executrix shall happen to contract her selfe in marriage within the saide three years that then the said portion to be taken from my saied executrix by my said overseers and they to keep yt to the use of my saied sonne until the three yeres be full ended and then to delyver it unto my saied sonne. Item I do give unto my sonne Richard fyve pounds of lawful englishe money, tenne sheep and a silver spoone to be delyvered at his daye of marriage or at the age of one and twentie yeres. Item I do give unto my sonne Roberte fyve pounds of lawful englishe money tenne sheep and a silver spoone to be delyvered in suche sort as last before yt rehearsed. Item I do give unto my daughter Margery six pounds and thirtene shillinges and fower pence of lawful englishe money to be delyvered as ys aforesaid.

Item I do give unto Charles Whiffin twoe sheepe. Item I do give unto my god sonne John Waye two sheepe. Item I give unto Luce Dowle two chilver hogges . Item I do give unto John Yetman three shillinges fower pence. Item I do give unto the parishe churche of Sherborne twoe shillinges.

Item my will ys that yf Margery my wife shall happen to marrye or contract herself in marriage within three yeres next after my decease that then such portion and portions as I have given unto Richard, Robert and Margery my children those my overseers shalle take all suche there portions into their handes and use it to the preferrment of my said children until the tyme of theire marriages or one and twentie yeres of age as ys aforesaid. And if any of my said children do decease before the tyme of receyvinge theire said legacey that then suche portion or portions shalle and remayne unto those of my children that then shalle be lyvinge to be equally devyded among them. All the rest of my goodes not before given nor bequeathed as well moveable as non moveable I do give unto Margery my wife whome I do make whole Executrix of this my last will and testamente. And I do appoint John Cupper, John Wynmiffe, Willm Morris and Henry Bushrot my brother to be overseers of this my laste will and testamente and for their …… I do give them fower pence a peece. Witnesses to this same John Yetman, Anthony Dunham, Henry Bushrot.

Dredge – a mixture of oats & barley sown together
Wayne – a large open 4 wheeled wagon used on farms
Hogge – sheep of either sex, from six months old to the first shearing
