My maternal grandfather's surname is Bushell and the family originates from Preston near Faversham, Kent. I have traced his parents back to the mid 1800's and have anecdotal evidence that the father of the previous generation was called John and that his father in turn was French.

Although "your" John is clearly not the father, there seems to be a possibilty of a link.

If you would like to explore this further, please contact me.

Chris
