There have been many transcriptions of Abraham's will (1687) on the web. (e.g. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/i/d/Brian-P-Ridgell/PDFBOOK1.pdf) They must all copy from one another (or perhaps from Sparacio who first published a transcript). I find a phrase omitted from all, one having to do with the children directed to live with and work for their mother. The omitted phrase appears between the asterisks in the transcript below:
“I doe order it thus that my Sone George shall stay and work with and for his mother *one year and afterwards he is to work for himself, Likewise my Sone John shall stay with his mother* two yeares and work for her and then he is for himself, also my Sone Abraham work for his mother three yeares then he shall be for himselfe.”
I would appreciate feedback from anyone who agrees or disagrees with my reading of the will. (A digital copy of the will may be viewed at http://gordonbush.com/genealogy/bg-ped/pictures/abraham_bush-will-1686.jpg)
Finally, I wonder if anyone has considered who Abraham is referring to as the mother of George, John and Abraham Jr. He names his wife Ann in the will, and her will several years later makes no mention of George, John or Abraham Jr. Clint Bush has suggested that the mother Abraham was referring to was his first wife Martha. But how could she be living if Abraham was allowed to legally marry Ann (I don't think divorce was allowed in Virginia at that time).
Would like to hear how thoughts on this.
