Deaths of the Day
John M. Dungan
John M Dungan, a well known resident of Wabash Avenue, died at the New Castle Hospital Thursday evening 8 December 1910. He had been ill for about two weeks suffering from pneumonia and was taken to the hospital sometime ago but the physicians were powerless to check the advance of the disease, and he passed away last evening.
Mr. Dungan was 68 years of age. He was the son of the late Honorable Thomas Dungan of North Beaver township who was the first to represent Lawrence County in the state legislature. John M Dungan was a member of a large family and is survived by five brothers, William W. the reverend George W. and Q. A. Dungan, all living in Nebraska. H. W. of Mahoningtown and E.W. Dungan of Mercer County.
The deceased was for many years a member of Bethel U.P. church, and served as a ruling elder for ten years or more. When he removed to Mahoningtown, he first affiliated himself with the M.E. Church, but later with the Presbyterian Church of which he was a member until death. His wife and three daughters all preceded him in death. Thomas his son was killed on the B R and P railroad, and his two daughters Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Ira Bush died recently of tuberculosis. His grandchildren number 9. Mr. Dungan was the Uncle to the well known police officer T.D. Davidson.
Mr. Dungan was known as a man of faith and prayer and honest integrity and will be missed by his church and his among a wide circle of friends and neighbors. He was employed for several years by Standard Steele Car Works and was held in esteem both by the managers and all the workmen.
The funeral will be held Sunday morning Dec 11 in the Mahoningtown Presbyterian Church at 10:15. A second service will be held after the regular church service at the
Bethel U.P. Church, and the interment will be made at Bethel Cemetery.
AS AN ADDED NOTE:
Mr. John M Dungan in the 1900 Census was living with his son in law Barney Bush and daugher Jennie (Barney's wife) in New Castle ward 7 District 110 Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. John's wife Catherine there also. Mr. Dungan was a U.S. mail carrier at that time. So, thereafter, Catherine, Jennie and Mary (Ira Bush's wife) all passed, before John Dungan did.
