Hi Patricia:
You are not the only one who has experienced some confusion
over dates in Ms. Wilkerson's book you referenced.
However, in the Foreword of the book she states:
"The date of marriages shown in deeds, wills and court orders is THE DATE OF THE RECORD IN WHICH THE MARRIAGE IS FOUND - AND NOT THE DATE OF THE MARRIAGE...."
(I AM NOT SCREAMING HERE BUT JUST EMPHASIZING)
She goes on to explain that ACTUAL marriage dates are shown
only as the YEAR and do not have a month and date with them. THat explains a bit of the confusion, but more importantly, there are several errors in her thinking here as follows:
Richard Bush I was dead by 1700 (will proven 10/30/1700
Essex Co., Va. D & W 10 - Page 85), so 1706 cannot possibly be a marriage date for Elizabeth Bibby and him.
Her assumption here was the first error.
Secondly, the document she quoted as a source for this 1706
actual marriage date does mention Elizabeth Bibby, but only as the mother of Richard:
From Virginia Colonial Abstracts - Vol 29 - Essex Co. Records 1703-1706 by Beverly Fleet - p.89)
"Richard Bush, SON and heir of Elizabeth Bush, deceased
who was the daughter and heir of John Beby, deceased
sells Richard Corthorne, for 3000 pounds tobo, 17 acres at
the mouth of Piscataway Creek. Adjs. Bushes Old Spring Branch, the head of Murtle Swamp, etc.
Wit: Mary x Wellch
Edward Farington
Dower rights relinquished by ELIZABETH (Roberts)BUSH, WIFE
of Richard Bush" (II) Ack. and rec.6/10/1706
The additions in parentheses are mine for clarification.
This 1706 document was just the earliest reference she found that stated Richard (II) had a wife named Elizabeth.
Her third error was that she broke her own rule of using only the year when it is an actual marriage date. The 1706
document is not the actual marriage date nor does it say so. The actual date of the document then, i.e. 6/10/1706
should have been used instead of just the year.
It always pays to take a look at the original document.
2/18/1697 - ELIZABETH ROBERTS is mentioned as daughter of Edmund and Constant Roberts. (Essex Co., Va. D & W 10 - Page 87 Will of John Savage)
It is possible, however that they were married earlier than 1706.
On 12/10/1701- Bond in the amount of L200 Sterling signed by RICHARD BUSH for Constant Roberts as Administrator of Edmnd/Edward Roberts, deceased ......(Essex County Records 1703-1706 - Page 121) This, at least indicates that Richard II was already close enough to the Roberts family in 1701 to sign this bond upon the death of Elizabeth's father.
Patricia I would like for you to know that having one of the male Bushes in your line DNA tested at familytreedna.com would be very benficial to you and to others who have already had it done. PLease take a look at www.familytreedna.com to get more information. You would be looking at having a 37 or 67 male marker test done, but it must be a male named Bush. I cannot tell you how helpful it has been to me and I am willing to work with you in showing you how it works if you decide to do it.
Give it some thought.
Hope this clarifies things a bit for you, even though we have no actual marriage date yet.
Carol
