Just wanted to let you ladies know of a few changes that are presently occurring in my thinking about my John Bush of Essex. These changes might affect your thinking in working out the John Bush of Stafford who was in Essex 1715/16.
As you may know Abraham Bush had land listed on records of Old Rappahannock Co., Va. from 10/20/1664 through ca. 1683.
These lands may be in Old Rapp/Essex beacuse of border changes between Lancaster and Essex. At any rate it is possible that his son, John was in Essex BEFORE 1715/16 as follows:
2/8/1705 - JOHN BUSH from Wm. Pannell & wife, Frances, Thos. Pannell & wife, Elizabeth(Essex Co., Va. Deed Book 12 - Page 412)
2/8/1705 - JOHN BUSH from James Phillips & wife(Essex Co., Va. Deed Book 12 - Page 195)
3/11/1705-6Wm. Pannell and Elizabeth, his wife and James Philliips and Sarah, his wife, all of Richmond County, Va. sell JOHN BUSH of Essex County 150 acres in Essex County. This land formerly sold by John Prosser to Thos. Pannell 11/18/1673 for 250 acres.... (Essex Co., Va. Colonial Abstracts 1703-1706 0 Vol. 29 - Richmond Va. - Beverly FleetPage 83. Source: Essex Co., Va. Deeds and Wills Book 12 - Pg. 195)
3/11/1706 - JOHN BUSH - acknowledgement of deed of land from Thomas Pannell and James Phillips (Essex Co., Va. Orders 3 - Page 227)
5/3/1707 - JOHN BUSH - witness on deed (Essex Co., Va. Deed Book 12 - Page 405)
On 5/10/1707 JOHN BUSHwitnessed a deed(Essex County Records 1706-07, 1717, 1719 -- John Frederick Dorman - Page 27)
9/10/1707 - JOHN BUSH vs. William Miller(Essex Co., Va. Order Book 3 - Page 374)
10/10/1707 - JOHN BUSH - Payment to William Miller (Essex Co., Va. Order Book 3 - Page 380)
1/10/1708 - JOHN BUSH - Indebted to Phillip Lake's estate (Essex Co., Va. Order Book 4 - Page 99)
2/11/1709 -JOHN BUSH vs. John Pickle - (Essex Co., Va. Order Book 4 - Page 128)
3/10/1709 - JOHN BUSH - judgement affirmed against John Lomax (Essex Co., Va. Order Book 4 - Page 137)
2/9/1710 - JOHN BUSH - Payment for 5 wolves (Essex Co., Va. Order Book 4 - Page 294)
5/10/1710- John Bush vs.Gabriell Long - Suit (Essex D & C 13 - Page 3+50)
(Essex Order Book 4 - Page 256)
5/22/1710 - Order given to the Sheriff to attach the estate of John Bush
5/29/1710 - Order served on the estate of John Bush.....although he was not found to be arrested.
6/10/1710- At the suit of Gabriell Long, JOHN BUSH returned "non est inventus" for 700 pounds of tobacco due by bill. ("Our Family Bush" Sandra Bush Brownlow - Pg. 37-38)
11/9/1711 - JOHN BUSH - fined for not going to church (Essex Co., Va. Order Book 4 - Page 403)
5/13/1714 - JOHN BUSH vs. Wm. Chase - action of debt dismissed ( Essex Co., Va. Order Book 4 - Page 579)
7/9/1714 - JOHN BUSH vs. Mary Tindell - action dismissed(Essex Co., Va. Order Book 4 - Page 589)
1/4/1715-16-JOHN BUSH of Essex County, Va. sold 150 acres to John Todd of Stafford County, Va. Signed JOHN BUSH, MARGARET BUSH, wife of JOHN BUSH.
MARGARET BUSH relinquished her dower rights. John married Maragret ca. 1706. (Virginia Colonial Abstracts" - Beverly Fleet - pg. 65 and 77)
(Essex Co., Va. D & W 14 - Page 541)
1/1/1716 - John Bush formerly purchased land from Wm. and Thomas Pannell
(Essex D & W 15 - Page 35)
1/4/1716 - Deed from John Bush to John Todd (Essex D & W 14 - Page 641)
3/20/1716 John Bush granted oyer in suit of Robert Parker (Essex Order Book 5 - Page 11)
3/22/1716 - John Bush estate attached by John Griffin (Essex Order Book 5- Page 42)
8/21/1716 - John Bush and wife, Margaret on deed to John Todd (Essex D & W 14 - Page 644)
5/22/1717 John Bush - action of debt against Robert Parker (Essex Order Book 5 - Page 34)
The reason why all or some of the above MAY BE John Bush of Stafford is because of the following document:
10/11/1708 - John Bush, ORPHAN, was bound out to Richard Bush who was to teach him the trade of Cooper. (Essex Order Book 4 - pg. 89) Binding out occured around age 14 in Virginia at the time and this JOhn was too young to be the one on all the above documents. As a matter of fact his first appearance on record when he was of age was on the following:
9/19-20/1720- Catherine Young of Southfarnham Parish, Essex Co., Va., widow and Frances Ransome, widow and relict of Robert Ransome, deceased, late of King and Queen County to JOHN BUSH of Southfarnham Parish, planter, lease and release for 4000 lbs. of sweet scented tobacco, 500 acres, part of 714 acres formerly granted to Mr. Edward Thomas by patent 4/23/1688 (Essex County, Va. Records 1717-1722- Pg. 23, - John Frederick Dorman - Deeds and Wills Bk. # 16 - Pg. 233,237)
Since this John Bush was 14 in 1708, then in 1715 he was 21 and in 1720 he was 26. This makes him born in 1694 and therefore, son of Richard Bush's second wife, Mary.
A recent DNA test from an Abraham BUsh descendant at FTDNA indicated no match with mine. I am hoping more of Abe's descendants will also be tested to add further confirmation to this, but at this point in time it looks like there is no connection between the two lines.
Linda I am hoping that there may be someting in these pre-1720 Essex records that could shed light on what you may need for your research. I did not have this information until recently. It never did make sense to me that John of STafford would have only been in Essex for one or two records. Anyway good luck with this.
Carol
