Hi Charles:
To answer your questions about a possible book - I have not done one, but Gene Cato, Susan Marshall and I have collaborated on an atrticle for a genealogy magazine called "The Virginia Genealogist" It was titled "Children of Bibby and Susanna Bush of Essex County, Va." and is in the October-December 2002 Volume 46 - Number 4 - page 308 issue. If you are not near a library that has it just send me your email address and I will email it to you if you want it. Hopefully there will be more in the near future as we discover new information. You will find any future publications mentioned here on the forum.
I am glad to hear you are making progress in your family search even though they are a bunch of "tumbleweeds"
The problem you are having has most likely been and is being experienced by every researcher on the planet.. So you are not alone.
Women are particularly hard to research and it is so exasperating to have difficulty finding those maiden names.
Since your line is not the same as mine, I do not know the answer to your question, but here are a few clues to follow through.
According to the Census Index that I have, the 1810 Edgefield Census shows two "Hamptons"
Edward Hampton - page 32
Wing Hampton - page 99
See if either of them have a daughter who is approximately 1 year old. I say approximately because it would all depend on her birthdate as to whether she was actually one or not at the time the census was taken.
1820 Edgefield Census:
Richard Hampton - page 134Jane would be about age 11 here
if in this household. (I think this one may be located at www.usgenweb.net - Click on South Carolina and then Edgefield County and then scroll down to Censuses)
1830 Edgefield Census:
Richard Hampton - page 196Jane would be about 21 if in this household.
If you do not live near a Library that has all the censuses you can contact a local LDS Morman Church and if they have a library they can order these censuses for you to view. They are also very helpful in many other ways if you are stumped over something. I would also ask them about checking on Edgefield Deeds to see if the name Hampton is on any of them with your Bushes. They can also order this for you.
There may also be some good folks on this forum who have copies of these censuses or know where to find them on the internet and can give assistance. There are some who are connected to your line and may be able to tell you more about the Hampton surname and any connections to it
If JAN BABB and HORACE SATCHER are tuned in they know a lot about the South Carolina Bushes and might be able to help more.
This should give you a start. Happy hunting!
Carol
