BUSH's in Va., W.VA.,and Penn. by 1790's
Post # 3001 on this forum deals with Bush families of W. Virginia in an area that was formed from Augusta Co., Virginia.
Post # 3098 is primarily information from the books "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia", by L. Chalkley, Vol 1-3, and THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT SOME OF THESE BUSH'S ARE OF GERMAN ANCESTRY.The time period for the books is 1745-1800.Bush's mentioned are George, William, Michael, Philip, Daniel, David, Dennis, Henry,John, Joshua, Martin, Michael, Nicholas, Philip, Thomas, Maximilian,Richard and Vance Bush.
From Tax Lists of Virginia we find:
Daniel in 1758, Philip in 1759, and Vance Bush in 1782 in Frederick Co., Virginia. Philip Bush in Winchester, of Frederick Co. Va. in 1764.(This one owned a Tavern?)
(Frederick Co. Va. was formed from Augusta and Orange Co. Va.)
John and Lewis Bush on 1782 Tax List of Hampshire Co. Va. (later became W. Va.)
John Bush on list of 1782 in Monongalia Co., Va.(this county also formed from Augusta Co., Va.)
In looking at Pennsylvania Census of 1790, many of the names found earlier in Augusta Co. Virginia, are found in Pa.:
1790 Dauphin Co. Pa. Census- David, John, Martin Bush. (and a Maryann Bush)
1790 Northampton Co., Pa. Census- Benjamin, George, Henry, Jacob, James, John, John, Jost (sp?), and Lodwick Bush (probably Ludwig?)
1790 Washington Co.,Pa. Census-Robert Bush
1790 Bedford Co.., Pa. Census-Hendrey (sp?) Bush
1790 Westmorland Co., Pa. Census-Daniel Bush
1790 Northumberland Co. Pa. Census-Nicholas Bush
It seems that it is most often thought that the German Bush's arrived in Pa. or a northern port, but isn't it possible that many of the German Bush's who went to Pennsylvania, and to West Virginia and beyond, were actually descendants of the Augusta Co., Virginia Bush's and that the Augusta Co., Virginia Bush's arrived first in Virginia? These are not my Bush's, but I am curious about them and would like to hear about any other research done on these Bush's of Augusta Co., Va. and their possible origins.
Thanks,
Georgi
