Katherine, Robert Saunders Burwell was the brother of my great-great-grandfater, Philip Lewis Carter Burwell. He was born in 1841/2 at Carter's Grove plantation in James City County, VA. His father was Philip Carter Lewis Burwell, the last Burwell owner of Carter's Grove. His mother was Susan Ann Lee, daughter of Hon. Daniel Lee and Elizabeth Nicholson Lee of Winchester, VA. Susan died in 1848 and PCL moved his family to Winchester, where Robert, Lewis and their 2 sisters Laura and Louise were fostered by Susan's brother, Hugh Holmes Lee, and his wife, Mary Greenhow Lee. Mary kept an extensive civil war diary which mentions Bob often. He served with the 2nd VA Infantry and was a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island. I have 2 pieces of information on Bob after the war. The 1880 census lists him as living with his brother Lewis in Mt. Savage, MD. In 1896/7 he was living in Texas. The government settled claim that his father (PCL) filed for use of and damages to the Taylor Hotel in Winchester during the war. Bob's military records are available on Fold3. Read Genteel Rebel by Sheila R. Phipps, Defend the Valley and Mary Greenhow Lee's diary. Sorry it took me a decade to find this and respond! Please let me know what you find.
