Cromp/Vaulx/Burwell connection 1648
Ladies and Gentlemen: I have read with interest the history of your family on this Forum. I am currently doing some research on two William Crumps (Cromp/Crumpe) from the earliest days of the colony. One in York and later New Kent County, and the other from Lancaster and later Talbot Co., MD. They appear to be contemporaries, yet different individuals. Your Maj. Lewis Burwell claimed a headright for one William Cromp (among 47 individuals)on June 12, 1648. In return he received 2350 acres of land on the York River in VA. Earlier he and Thomas Vaulx had received 2300 acres for headrights for 46 individuals.
Some of my Crump family have been researching the relationship between William Crump and the Vaulx family, especially in York Co (later New Kent County), where many Crumps were recorded in the latter part of the 17th century. Maj. Burwell could have been a key to our research!
Can you tell me where the subjects of these headrights came from? Did he own a ship? "Headrights" implied "paying passage for". The reason I ask is that over 80% of the Crumps in England during the mid 17th century were from the West Midland counties (shires) of Shropshire, Gloucester, and Worchester; and not from the London area which included Bedford, Sussex, Essex, London, and Surrey.
Additionally, I am intrigued by the reference in a very early message about Lewis Burwell being in a delegation inviting Charles II to visit Virginia. What was Lewis' political persuasion? Does anyone know if there was a family relationship with the Valux's? Has anyone ever heard of Ann Vaulx (who may?? have married a William Crump)?
I am also doing some fairly serious research on the Crumps of England and Ireland during the period 1600-1700, and would appreciate any comments from your family group. Especially since there was at least an indirect connection.
I suspect that someone in the family is regarded as the "expert" on these early days, and I would appreciate a referral to him or her. Regards from Ed Crump in Louisiana
