Over the last few days, I have been looking at the early BURTONs of Laurens Co, SC. Let's take a look at the 1790 and 1800 censuses and see who we find.

In the 1790 census, we find the following BURTONs in Laurens Co, SC:

1) Hutchins Burton, single male over 16 years of age, in District No. 9, on page 437.

2) William Burton appears as head of a family in District No. 6 in Laurens Co, SC census, page 434. Enumerated are 1-1-6 plus 3 slaves. Neighbors: Joseph Downes Esqr, Thomas Parker, Hastin Ciall, John Pain, William Seval, John Holmes, William Bradsher, Arthur Durham, Samuel Latham, Edward Hunter, Stephen Durham, Jonathan Downes Esqr. (After 1790, I cannot identify this fellow? And where did he go?) These citations indicate that he lived on Reedy River.

(d)At the meeting of Turkey Creek Church in June, 1794, Arthur Durham and David McGladery asked the privilege "of collecting the number of members about them to see Whether they be Ripe for constitution or not." f595 This group built a meeting house south of Reedy River near Poplar Springs <SE of Princeton> in Laurens District. f596 David Green’s plat of 1787 "whereon there is a meeting house" may show the first meeting place of this church. At their constitution on July 14, 1794, they were known as Durham Church and entered Bethel Association under that name, but by 1795 they had adopted the title Poplar Spring Church by which they are still designated.

3) William Burton appears as head of a family in District No. 8 in Laurens Co, SC census, page 436. Enumerated are 1-4-2. Neighbors: James Hollingsworth, Richard Owings, Edward Owings, William Thompson, James Card, John Card, John Lawrens, John Hollingsworth, Benjamin Townsend, John Arnold, Robert McNeese, Joshua Saxon. (Joshua Saxon is a close neighbor. Could this be Dr. William Burton, who sold Joshua Saxon a negro slave in 1791 <see D/83 below>). (After 1790, I cannot identify this fellow? And where did he go?) These citations indicate that he lived on Rabon Creek and Saluda River.

(d)4/4/1791: Doctor William BURTON deeded to Joshua SAXON one negro child Patt in trust for Clarinda SAXON ‘til (her) age 16. Wit: Joshua Saxon, Joseph Downs. Recorded in Laurens Co, SC Deed Book D, page 083.

NOTE: Rabon Creek flows southeasterly into the Reedy River and Reedy River flows into the Saluda River. So, actually, both of these men named William Burton lived on the eastern edge of Laurens Co, SC between the towns of Princeton and Waterloo. This appears to be the same area where Thomas Burton (d. 1830) lived. Could there have been a family connection between Thomas Burton (d. 1830) and one of these William Burtons. The eldest son of Thomas Burton (d. 1830) was named William Burton (b. 1777), so maybe there was a connection.

In the 1800 Census, the following BURTONs appear in Laurens Co, SC.
1) Robert Burton (M26-45), page 019: I believe this to be the son of Charles Burton and Loveday Franklin, of Chesterfield Co, VA, who settled
on Durban Creek, on the south side of the Enoree River in the NE section of Laurens Co, SC, sometime
around 1793. Robert Burton died in 1803, leaving his widow Sarah. He would have been a
descendent of Thomas Burton, of Cobbs.

2) Hutchins Burton (M>45), page 36B: This is husband of Martha Ragsdale, who appears to have migrated from Mecklenburg Co, VA somtime
before the 1790 census, and settled on Ryan and Beaverdam Creeks off of Little River, SE of the
present-day Town of Mountville. I have TENTATIVELY assigned him as a son of Capt. Noel Burton, who
died in Lunenburg <later became part of Mecklenburg Co> Co, VA in 1763, a descendent of John
Burton, of Longfield.

3) Thomas Burton (M>45), page 037B: Left will in 1802, with wife Lillian. This is son of James Burton and Judith Paine, of Charlotte Co (situated
on northern border of Mecklenburg Co, VA), VA, and a descendent of Thomas Burton, of Cobbs. It
appears that this Thomas Burton migrated to Laurens Co, SC about 1796 and settled on Ryan and
Beaverdam Creeks off of Little River, SE of the present-day Town of Mountville.

4) Thomas Burton Sr (M>45), page 044B: Left will in 1830, with wife Rachel. This is your guy. He first appears in Laurens Co, SC in 1796 and
appears to have settled on Rabon Creek, which I described above. He is NOT named in Thomas
Burton's 1802 will, so I have my doubts about any connection. But for now, I have TENTATIVELY
assigned him as Thomas Burton Jr to the Thomas Burton, who died in 1802, just to keep them close.
Both did live in the southern region of Laurens Co.

Gerre Byrd sent these to me back in 2008, in case you haven't seen them.

Do any of you BURTON rooters out there in cyberland have any ideas about the origins of and of what later became of those two men named William Burton, who appeared in the 1790 census, and then appear to have left Laurens Co, SC afterwards. Let me hear from you.
