Here are a few additional notes on John and Benjamin Burton. 7/24/1820: Henry WADKINS land survey of 417 acres, on Crooked Creek and a Branch of Cedar Creek, both waters of Chaug Creek of Toogaloe River, adjoining his own land on the east, Pendleton District, SC <Plat Book 3, p.26. Index incorrectly lists it as p.36, 1810>. Chain carriers -- Hesket Wadkins and James Cole. 5/17/1823: Rebecca Burton, widow of James Burton, now deceased and administratix of said Burton's estate and we John and Benjamin Burton, legatees, sold to John McDavid, for $180, 60 acres on the waters of Mountain Creek and Saluda River (Mountain Creek lies north of City of Greenville between Towns of Travelers Rest and Taylors), being a part of a tract of land originally granted to John Blackwell, from him conveyed to Solomon Goodwin, from him to the said Rebecca Burton and heirs of said James Burton, decd, in joint turnout and now from said Rebecca, John and Benjamin Burton to the said John McDavid. This land being a part of the interest which they are properly and legally intitled (sic) to of said estate, the said Rebeca (sic) being one of the persons nominated by court to superintend the same...bound by William Davenport's land...bound by A. McCokey...bound by corner Burton's...bound by Mr. Burton's...bound by Devenport's... Wit: Samuel Moore, Daniel E. Bagwell. Recorded in Greenville Co, SC Deed Book O, pages 117-18. 6/6/1827: Richard Holden, "now livng in the Cherokee Nation," formerly of Habersham Co.,GA, sold 500 acres to Henry WAKINS of Pendleton District, SC, for $300.00, on Shoulderbone Creek, waters of Chatooga River, known as "No. 3," occupied now by Henry WATKINS, "all other sides vacant," granted to Richard Holden <Anderson Co., SC, Deed Book S, p.158>. Wit. Heskitt Watkins, Richard (X) Edmundson. Heskitt Watkins appeared and made oath 4 Jul 1827. Recorded 11 Oct 1827. 10/11/1827: J. Coley sold to J. Burton 140 acres on Shoulderbone and Crooked Creeks. Recorded in Oconee Co, SC Deed Book 10, page 351. 10/3/1828: Henry WATKINS deeded 106 acres on the Chauga on the Tugaloo, Pickens County, SC, originally granted to Henry Wadkins, to David Russell for $100.00 (DB B-1, p.216). Recorded 13 Sep 1832. Wit. Chas. McClure, Wiley Russell. Also see deed Russell to John Smith, not included here, at which Henry WATKINS signed as a witness. 1830: John Burton (M30-40) appears as head of a family in Pickens Co, SC census, page 305. Also enumerated are F20-30, F15-20, M5-10, F5-10, M<5, 3F<5. Benjamin Burton (M30-40) appears on page 304. Jesse Coley (M40-50) appears on page 304. Henry Watkins (M40-50), David Russel (M60-70) and Wiley Russel (M20-30) appears on page 303. The only other John Burtons in SC in this census were in Laurens Co and Abbeville Co, but both were aged 40-50 years of age, way too old to be John Burton, of Chatooga Co, GA. 3/31/1831: Uriah W. Russell sold to J. Burton 467 acres on Chauga River (flows south from spot about 8 miles NW of Walhalla, past Westminister and empties into the Tugaloo River below US Hwy 123) and Town Creek. Recorded in Oconee Co, SC Deed Book 2, page 153. 6/21/1834: Deed from Benjamin BURTON to George W. Philips, both of Pickens Dist. I, Benj. Burton am selling land on Little Toxaway Creek near to Long Nose Mtn. (area located in present-day Oconee Co, SC about 8 miles NW of Town of Westminster) unto the sd Phillips to secure the above pay't of $150.00, which I am owing to the sd Phillips; In three installment of 100 gallons of whiskey. The first 200 to be delivered on the 13th of March next, and the other 100 gallons in one year from that date, and the other 100 gallons to be delivered in two years from that date. And if the above bound Burton shall pay or cause to be paid unto the said Phillips, three hundred gallons of good "merchandable" whiskey agreeable to the above then the above obligation is to be void and null. Otherwise it is to remain in full force by law. Signed and acknowledged in present of us this 21 day of June 1834. Signed by Benjamin Burton Andrew FERGUSON, Sr. James FERGUSON. If I may continue to paraphrase, June 25, 1834 - Rec'd $100; August 14, 1834 - Rec'd four gallons of whiskey. "August 14, 1834, I assigned the mortgage over to James SHED for fourty-eight dollars".
