Howdy Janice I can't tell you how excited I was to see your note with the list of children for William Burton + Mary Smith giving one married to Sam Miller. As you may have seen in Bob Burton's message, I am descended from Samuel Miller + Elizabeth Burton. I've long suspected there was some connection to the family of Cuthbert Burton, but couldn't find anything definite. I'm certain that Sam's wife was Elizabeth Burton. The death certificate for his son John gives John's parents as Samuel + Elizabeth, and the death certificate for daughter Dorothy gives Elizabeth's maiden name as Burton. Samuel Miller's daughter Ann married John Rigsby and had a son Cuthbert B Rigsby. Sam's daughter Martha married Nelson Long and had a son Cuthbert Burton Long. [Ann's daughter Jane Rigsby married Martha's son James Long; they were my gg-grandparents.] For a long time I thought Cuthbert Burton might be Elizabeth's father, but clearly his daughter Elizabeth married a Hazelip. Sam + Elizabeth's first son was named John, which is supposed to be the name of Sam's father. (I haven't proved that yet.) Their second son was William Burton Miller. If they followed the naming conventions, Elizabeth's father should be William. Given that they used the middle name Burton, I think it very likely Elizabeth's father was William. The only sticking point right now is that your list of children for William Burton shows daughter Sarah married to Sam Miller, and daughter Elizabeth married to a Spillman. I really want to say the names are reversed. As above, I'm sure Samuel Miller married Elizabeth. Unfortunately, I can't yet determine the Spillman marriage. I feel fairly sure that this is the family: 1850 census Allen Co KY p147a Saml Spillman 59 VA Robert M 32 IL? E A R (f) 22 KY Saml W Hargiss 24 TN But the wife has died so she can't be identified. Samuel Spillman is also on the 1840 census: 1840 census Allen Co KY p59 Saml Spillman 1 M <5, 1 M 15-20, 1 M 40-50, 1 F 15-20, 1 F 20-30 He is listed 8 lines away from John Rigsby who married Ann Miller. I can't tell if that oldest female is Samuel's wife or daughter. It seems like daughter is more likely. One possibility is that the marriages did occur as listed in your note, but that Sam's wife and Elizabeth's husband both died young and Sam then married Elizabeth. The 1810 census for Spartanburg Co SC shows a Samuel Miller with a wife, two sons, and a daughter. I'm not positive that's my Sam, but I can't find mine anywhere else. What's bothering me is those additional children. All the children I've found for Sam were born 1813 or later. If Elizabeth was his second wife and that census entry him, what happened to the other children? And if Elizabeth was first married to a Spillman, what happened to Robert? Or did all those children die with the first spouses, and it be just coincidence that there are Spillmans in Allen Co? Or it could just be that the information from Richard Dietz is wrong. At the Allen Co KY web site I found this marriage record: Spillman, Samuel to Burton, Nancy 15 Sep 1814 I see that William Burton had a daughter Nancy for whom Richard has no information. How confident are you with the accuracy of his information? I suspect there are further connections between my Rigsby and Miller families and the Burtons. Cuthbert Burton served in the War of 1812 in the same company as Samuel Miller and John Sr Rigsby (father of the John who married Sam's daughter). My Rigsbys came from Wake Co NC (next to Orange Co) to Pendelton Dist SC (near Spartanburg) before coming to Allen Co KY. There is a John Miller near the Rigsbys in Wake Co and one near the Burtons in Spartanburg Co, but I don't know that they are the same John Miller. As I understand it, the Burtons originally were from Henrico Co VA, and one of the original Rigsby immigrants arrived in Henrico Co VA in 1637. This may be a bunch of coincidences, but I think the three families are closely connected. Do you have any information on Millers or Rigsbys in your early Burton info? Also, I have a Silas Burton in Allen Co KY who married Elizabeth Rigsby. Do you know who he is? Thank you very much for posting that information. Ken Notify Administrator about this message?
