9/6/1775: Jesse C Burton, of Campbell Co, sold to Phillip F. Burton, of Amherst Co, for 400 pds, 400 acres in Amherst Co, on the south side of Buffeloe River. Mentions land of John Penn and Huffs Creek. Recorded in Amherst Co, VA Deed Book F, page 018.

4/25/1786: Philip Burton, of Amherst Co, and Nancy his wife, sold to Joseph Barras 400 acres on Buffaloe River in said county, adjoining Matt. Tucker and Huff's Creek. Recorded in Amherst Co, VA Deed Book F, page 059.

1790: Phillip Burton appears in Amherst Co, VA List of Taxable Property in District of William Ware of Lexington Parish. Listed as owning 7 slaves. Others: David Burton (poll plus 1 horse), Elliner Burton and son James, William Burton (poll only).

10/22/1792: John Jones and Frances his wife, of Bedford Co, deeded to Philip Burton, of Amherst Co, 314 acres. Recorded in Bedford Co, VA Deed.

7/23/1798: Philip Burton, of Bedford Co, deeded to William Burton, of the same, 40 acres on Cheese Creek, adjoining said William Burton's land. Wit: Robert Burton. Recorded in Bedford Co, VA Deed Book K, page 236.

1799: Phillip Burton appears in Amherst Co, VA List of Taxable Property in Lexington Parish. Listed as owning 10 slaves and 4 horses.

1801: Will of Phillip Burton, of Amherst Co, VA, signed 11/2/1801, was proved 12/17/1804.
Nancy Simpson Burton-life estate in slaves and land in Bedford Co., VA, dwelling place on Harris Creek in Amherst Co. At her death her interest goes to my natural son, Patrick Clayton, son of Nancy Clayton. And all other land goes to Patrick Clayton.
Excecutors: friends, Alex. and Robert Burton.
Wit: Thos. Moorman, Jesse Jones, Reuben Crawford, Hen. Holloway, Wm. B. Banks, Geo. Cabell, Thos. Higginbotham and Henry Rives.

2/16/1805: Nancy Burton, now Nancy Dawson, stated that under will of Phillip Burton, Nov. 2, 1801, she was given certain slaves and land privileges. Land on Harris Creek and in Bedford Co., VA. She renounced the will and demands rights. Wit: Jesse Woodroof and Nal. Norcutt.

5/20/1805: Administrator's Bond--Nelson C. Dawson, Pleasant Dawson, Henry Turner, Reuben Rucker, Isaac Rucker, and Jno. McDaniel, for Nelson C. Dawson to be administrator on estate of Phillip Burton.

5/20/1805: Guardian bond for Jno. W. Clayton, William Ware, Daniel Tucker, Geo. Douglas, Geo. Dillard, and Leonard Henley for Jno. W. Clayton as guardian of Patrick Clayton, natural son of Phillip Burton, deceased, by Nancy Clayton.

5/28/1805: Filing of inventory showed that he possessed 26 slaves, some in Amherst Co and the rest in Bedford Co, VA.

1810: Nelson C. Dawson appears as head of a family in Amherst Co, VA census, page 271. Enumerated are M>45,
F>45, M26-45, M16-26, F16-26, M10-16, 2F10-16, M<10, F<10 plus 23 slaves.

12/7/1815: Patrick P. Burton and wife, Emily W., of Bedford Co, sold to Nelson C. Dawson, of Amherst Co., for $3,000, 353 acres and reference to deed: George McDaniel Jr., to Philip Burton, 2 Mar. 1799. To Nelson C. Dawson, 3 Jul. 1827. Acknowledged as on page 25. Deeds of Amherst Co., VA 1807-1827, by Bailey Fulton Davis, page 028.
