Capt. William Burton (1720-1778) & Rebecca Cobbs (1730-1783)

It is I again from sunny Gainesville, FL. Over the past week, a few new friends and I have been having some fun sharing information and discussing this family. I am going to post some notes I have accumulated on this couple and their children. I hope you will find this data helpful. And of course, please share anything additional you may know of.

1744: Albemarle Co, VA created from Goochland Co.

11/17/1747: Robert Burton Sr, of Hennerico (sic) Co, sold to his son William Burton, of Goochland Co, , for 50 pds, 350 acres on the east side of Dover Mill Creek (located north of the James River, near present day Town of Sabot in Goochland Co, VA, ), adjoining lands of George Payne, Thomas Wadlow, Robert Adams and John Sutton Farrar. Recorded in Goochland Co, VA Deed Book 5, page 346.

1754-57: William Burton was a Justice of the Peace in Goochland Co, VA.

9/10/1761: WILLIAM BURTON sold to BENJAMIN HARRISON, for 35 pds, 400 acres on the fork of James River and adjoining Northside of Mt. Misery Creek. Lines: John Cobbs, Edward Pye Chamberlayne, Benjamin and Richard Cocke. Recorded in Albermarle Co, VA Deed Book 3, pages 097-99.

12/30/1762: William Burton deeded to the church wardens of St. Anne's in Albemarle Co, VA "400 acres for the use of the glebe, lying on both sides of Totear Creek (flows SW in Albemarle Co and empties into the James River about 2 miles south of the present-day Town of Scottsville), bounded by lands of John Rawlin, Charles Lynch and Matthew Harris. Look in Albemarle Co, VA Deed Book.

1772: Capt. William Burton was a vestry man of St. Anne's Parish in Albemarle Co, VA. Read Meade's Old Families and Churches, Vol II, page 050.

1778: Will of William Burton, signed 2/11/1776, was proved in 1778.
Wife: Mentioned but not named.
Sons: Robert, John Cobbs, William (under 21 years of age), Phillip Farrar, Jesse
Daus: Rebecca Thompson, Polly Burton, Susannah Burton
Executors: sons Jesse Burton and Robert Burton
Wit: Richard Perkins, Spencer Nowill
Recorded in Albemarle Co, VA Will Book II, page 360.

1783: Release from widow Rebecca Burton to my son Jesse Burton. Reference is made to (her father) John Cobbs) and and to the will of William Burton (her late husband), deceased. Recorded in Amherst Co, VA Deed Book E, page 377.
