The most authoritative source on the origins of this family is an article by George Skelton Terry of Buffalo, New York. It was published, in three parts, under the running title of "Genealogical Research in England, Burt–March", 'NEH&GR', Jan 1932, pp 77–84 (primary documents 1603 to 1659), Apr 1932, pp 216–220 (Court rolls of the March family, 1570 to 1647, and Burt genealogy), and Jul 1932, pp 247–252 (March genealogy).

A second reference, which treats in more detail the Burt line in Massachusetts, is 'Ancestry of Colonel John Harrington Stevens and his wife Frances Helen Miller' by Mary Lovering Holman, 1948.
