DNA project update

The BURROUGHS DNA project is slowly but surely building up a database. We now have 33 men who have had their Y-chromosome tested. Most of the participants are BURROUGHS, but the surnames BURROWS, BURROWES, BURRIS, BURROUGH, and BURROW are also represented.

Two or more people have been tested from a number of different branches. Any researcher who has hit a brick wall can now have a male relative tested and determine if he is related to any of the following early families:

1) John BURROUGHS of Enfield, CT (ancestor of Edgar Rice BURROUGHS, creator of Tarzan).

2) Edward BURROWES/BURROUGHS of Jamaica, NY (ancestor of John BURROUGHS the Naturalist).

3) John BURROUGHS of Newtown, NY.

4) John BURROUGHS of St. Mary’s County, MD.

5) BURROUGHS family of North Carolina

6) BURROW family of Virginia

The following families have one person tested who is a probable descendant:

1) Rev. George BURROUGHS of Salem witch trial fame.

2) early BURROUGHS family of Rhode Island.

3) Samuel BURROUGH of Gloucester County, NJ.

No descendants have been tested yet for the following early families:

1) Jeremiah BURROUGHS of Scituate, MA.

2) Robert BURROWS of Groton, CT.

Any direct male descendant of either of these two immigrants can have his Y-chromosome tested for free.

DNA results have been put online. Open the .xls file if you have Microsoft Excel. Otherwise open the .htm file. The Excel file usually prints out nicer.
