Hello David,

Thank you for the comments about the Jemima BURROUGHS who married David BLACKWELL. I think you are correct that she was the daughter of the William who died in 1819.

The information in Ralph EGE’s book is an important and reliable clue. Internet sources have the names and birth dates of all of the children of Jemima BURROUGHS (1725-1825) and Joseph HOWELL, which look like they came from a bible record. These same sources say that daughter Elizabeth HOWELL married William BURROUGHS. So it looks like the ancestry of David L. and Nelson D. BLACKWELL back to their great-great grandmother Jemima (BURROUGHS) HOWELL is:

Stephen BLACKWELL, married Francina
David BLACKWELL, married Jemima BURROUGHS (born in the 1780s)
William BURROUGHS, married Elizabeth HOWELL (born 16 Feb 1756)
Joseph HOWELL, married Jemima BURROUGHS (1725-1825)

An older William BURROUGHS dying in 1819 actually makes more sense. A single man in his 20s would be less likely to have had the land that was sold by the administrators. The administrators would then be his son-in-law David BLACKWELL and his likely son-in-law Solomon LABAW, who married Eleanor BURROUGHS on 3 Aug 1816 and had a son named William B. LABAW.

So now the question is, where does this William BURROUGHS fit on the family tree? One of the reasons that I had Jemima incorrectly placed as the son of Phillip was because there was no William of the right age to be her father. He was probably not the son of Joseph as mentioned in your post because no William was mentioned in Joseph’s 1797 will.

I have a good educated guess as to where William belongs. The 1782 will of Mary BURROUGHS of Trenton Tp Hunterdon Co, widow of Phillip4 (John3, Jeremiah2, John1), mentioned heirs of son William of PA. Could one of those heirs be the father of Jemima (BURROUGHS) BLACKWELL? Phillip4 had children in the 1730s and the first half of the 1740s. The William mentioned in Mary’s will could have had a son named William born about the same time as Elizabeth HOWELL. Elizabeth grew up in Newtown Tp Bucks Co PA. The PA connection works nicely.

William could be a grandson of Jeremiah4 (John3, Jeremiah2, John1). But there are no unplaced BURROUGHS in the Hunterdon Co records who could have been his father, and both of Jeremiah’s known grandsons ended up in Seneca Co NY.

Can you send me information on the children of David BLACKWELL and Jemima BURROUGHS? I only know of William Burroughs BLACKWELL and Stephen BLACKWELL.

Steve Warling
