Burris geneology in Pike County, KY
Posted by: Eddie Runyon (ID *****9040) Date: April 08, 2008 at 13:03:47

Hey all, I've been working on my Burris line for years now, here is what I have so far of my DIRECT relation to this line. I have much more info on brothers and sisters, spouses, kids, etc., but I just wanted to see if anyone has any links to this line and can collaborate with me, or if I can help anyone perhaps fill in any holes they may have. Feel free to email me with questions! For ease, my direct line, working back from me, is Sandy Bevins Runyon, Luna Burris Bevins, Joseph E. "Bud" Burris, Lafayette Burris, James Burris, Elizabeth Burris, and Micajah Burris. I'm also related to this Burris Line through my Bevins, as my GG Grandfather Lafayette Burris was a brother to my GG Grandmother Sarah "Sally" T. Burris Bevins. Confusing line, I know! LOL

Thanks,
Eddie Runyon

Descendants of Micajah Burris

Generation No. 1

1. MICAJAH1 BURRIS was born 1775 in Scotland or Bedford County, Virginia,
and died in Probably Russell County, Virginia. He married RACHEL MCCOY. She
was born 1775 in Virginia, and died in Probably Pike County, Kentucky.

Notes for MICAJAH BURRIS:

Sharon Burress says that Micah was a hatter by trade, that "he is found
purchasing hatter implements from an estate in Newberg, Va, when he was
about 27 years old."(as per Jack Hooker email)

1810 Census for Virginia, Montgomery County (online at ancestry.com):

Micajah Burris

female 10 to 15, 1 female 26 to 44

Listed next door is a George McCoy:

and on George Mcoy's other side is:

William McCoy

3 males under 10, 1 male 26 to 44; 1 female under 10, 1 female 26 to 44

1820 Census - nothing came up for Micajah Burress/Burris on ancestry's
indexed images

1830 Census Index for Virginia, Russell Co., page 1321 on
www.genealogylibrary.com's online index Research note: There is also a
William Burress in this index, same county; perhaps a brother to Micajah??

Images online on ancestry.com shows:

Micajah Burress

1 male 5 to 10, 1 male 10 to 15, 1 male 50 to 60; 1 female 5 to 10, 1 female
50 to 60

!1850 Census for Russell County, 54th District, Virginia: (note: Micajah is
in Elizabeth Burress' household)

Micajah Burress age 73, Hatter, b. Bedford Co. VA

(wife Rachel living in Pike Co. KY on this census, unless she was on an
extended visit?, with her son Daniel, age 40, a Laborer.) Perhaps Rachel and
Micajah were separated? (Rachel And Daniel were in home of dau Mary married
to William Mccoy)BCPH

(Micajah was head of house)BCPH

Elisabeth Burress age 46 b. North Carolina (is she a daughter, or a
daughter-in-law?)

Tempus Burress age 12 (Female) b. Russell Co. VA

Jane Burress age 9 b. Russell Co. Va

Rachel Burress age 5 b. Russell Co. Va

Henry A. Burress age 4 b. Russell Co. Va

Sidney Burress age 1 month (Male) b. Russell Co. Va

Military - Tara Wallace-Maggard gives the following:

War of 1812 Muster Rolls

Burress Micajah 4 Regiment Virginia Militia. Drummer 30 602

Burress Website by Michelle gives the following: "Micajah was born around
1777. He was the son of William Burrus. It is not known if his mother was
Ellender Candler or not. [wife] Rachel was born around 1775. She is the
daughter of "Old" William McCoy and Rachel (maiden name unknown.) Micajah
and Rachel were married on October 20, 1795 in Montgomery Co VA. Micajah was
a hatter. He lived most of his life in Russell Co Virginia, where he died
sometime after 1850. By that time, he and his wife Rachel were living apart.
Micajah was living in Russell Co. with his daughter-in-law Rachel Burress.
Rachel was living in Pike Co KY with her daughter Mary Ann. I do not know
why Rachel and Micajah were living apart." (Micajah was with a Elizabeth
Burrris)BCPH

I question Rachel being a dau of Old William McCoy. BCPH

Patricia Christian, hannah@netscope.net, gives Micajah's birthplace as
Bedford Co., VA

N.Niles on ancestry

I am spelling this name as Burris to keep them together in the index. It can
also be Burress. Burriss and Buriss. BCPH

Notes for RACHEL MCCOY:

There is question as to who her parents are. Some think she is a dau of Old
William Mccoy whose children came into Pike county. Others say he dad was a
Richard McCoy. I think she was a relative of Old William but there is
question as to her exact relationship.

In 1850 Rachel is 75 years old and living in the home of her daughter Mary
Burris McCoy (Mrs. William McCoy) in Pike County, KY. Also in the home is a
Daniel Burris age 40 who might be her son.

The next house is Elizabeth Burris who is head of the house at age 53 and
has one son Harrison.

Also in the neighborhood is James Burris age 21 and his wife Isabell
(Francisco) age 19. This is all the Burris family in Pike county in 1850.

Children of MICAJAH BURRIS and RACHEL MCCOY are:

2. i. ELIZABETH2 BURRIS, b. 1797, Virginia.

ii. JAMES H. BURRIS, b. 1802, Virginia.

Notes for JAMES H. BURRIS:

There is a James Burris married to Francis in Tazewell county Virginia in
1860.

3. iii. ELIZABETH BURRIS, b. 1804, North Carolina.

4. iv. DANIEL BURRIS, b. Bet. 1805 - 1810, Montgomery County, Virginia.

5. v. ELEANOR BURRIS, b. 1808.

6. vi. RACHEL BURRIS, b. 1809.

7. vii. MARGARET BURRIS, b. 1812, Virginia; d. Pike County, Kentucky.

8. viii. MARY A. BURRIS, b. 1820, Virginia.

Generation No. 2

2. ELIZABETH2 BURRIS (MICAJAH1) was born 1797 in Virginia.

Notes for ELIZABETH BURRIS:

It is not known if Elizabeth Burris was married. She is head of the house in
1850 with one child, Harrison. She is named as the mother of James Burris in
his marriage record.

Rachel Burris age 75 ( wife of Macajah Burris) lives next door to her.
Rachel is living with her daughter Mary and her son in law William McCoy.

Elizabeth seems to have came to KY from VA with Rachel and and Eleanor. Are
Micajah and Rachel McCoy Burris her parents or her in-laws.

Her two children are descendants of Micajah and Rachel the question is ---Is
it a paternal or maternal line. I am showing it as a maternal line . More
research needed.

Children of ELIZABETH BURRIS are:

9. i. JAMES3 BURRIS, b. 1832, Kentucky.

ii. HARRISON BURRIS, b. 1836.

Notes for HARRISON BURRIS:

Harrison claimed he was a soldier in the Civil War in the 1890 Pike County
special census for Union Soldiers. He claimed 39th company E. It is not
likely that other veterans would have allowed him to say this if it was not
true.

3. ELIZABETH2 BURRIS (MICAJAH1) was born 1804 in North Carolina.

Notes for ELIZABETH BURRIS:

In 1850 Russell County, Virginia Micajah Burris is 73 years old. He is head
of he house. the next person under his name is a female Elizabeth age 46.
She is born in North Carolina. Then there are Burris children. Is this
Elizabeth the dau or dau in law of Micajah and Rachel. I am listing her as
daughter to keep her children listed with the family as I think they belong
there. however, I am thinking she might be a dau in law because she is born
in NC and other Burris children Virginia. Further research needed in Russell
County. I do not think she is a second wife of Burris because there is a
small child named Rachel in the home. I do not think a second wife would
name a child after the first wife. I think this Rachel age 5 is the grand
dau of Micajah and his only wife Rachel McCoy .

Until I find a husband for Elizabeth and a maiden name for her I will keep
her here and correct if I find the information.

Children of ELIZABETH BURRIS are:

i. James Burris b. 1832

ii. TEMPURA3 BURRIS, b. 1838.

iii. JANE BURRIS, b. 1841.

iv. RACHEL BURRIS, b. 1845.

v. HENRY BURRIS, b. 1846.

vi. SIDNEY BURRIS, b. 1850

9. JAMES3 BURRIS (ELIZABETH2, MICAJAH1) was born 1832 in Kentucky. He
married ISABELLE FRANCISCO 11 Feb 1849 in Pike County, Kentucky, daughter of
JACOB FRANCISCO and JANE. She was born 1833 in Virginia.

Notes for JAMES BURRIS:

James Burris was a Union soldier. He served in the 39th company E. He was a
residence of Canada after the war and did receive a pension.

Marriage Notes for JAMES BURRIS and ISABELLE FRANCISCO:

This marriage record very plainly says two times that the mother of James
Burris is Elizabeth Burris. It also says that the father of Isabel Francisco
is Jacob Francisco twice and one is says Jacob Francis.

Children of JAMES BURRIS and ISABELLE FRANCISCO are:

i. GEORGE W.4 BURRIS, b. 1850; m. HANNAH SMITH, 30 Apr 1874, Pike County,

married MARGERY SMITH 21 Dec 1873 in Pike County, Kentucky, daughter of
DAVID SMITH and MELVINA PRUETT. She was born 1858. Lafayette “Lafe” Burris was the brother of Sarah “Sally” Burris, shown below, who married Thomas Jefferson Bevins.

Child of LAFAYETTE BURRIS and MARGERY SMITH is:

25. i. JOSEPH E.5 BURRIS, b. 1887; d. 1972.

married (1) THOMAS JEFFERSON BEVINS 28 Dec 1876 in Pike Country, Kentucky,
son of JOSEPH BEVINS and MARY WILLIAMSON. He was born 1844 in Pike County,
Kentucky. She married (2) JOHN W. FRANCIS 05 Dec 1892 in Pike County,
Kentucky, son of ELIJAH FRANCIS and CHARITY SMITH. He was born May 1855 in
Pike County, Kentucky.

Notes for SARAH BURRIS:

Sallie answers in 1900 she has had 7 children and only 2 are living
according to the census. Yet five of her Bevins children are in the Francis
home with her and one lives next door. Ancestry reads the Bevins name as
Beams.

It does not appear that she and John Francis had children.

Notes for THOMAS JEFFERSON BEVINS:

Thomas lived on Road Fork of Big Creek in Pike County, Kentucky.

Marriage Notes for SARAH BURRIS and THOMAS BEVINS:

Marriage must have ended in divorce.

George was my Great Grandfather, and Lafayette was my GG Grandfather on the Burris side, Grandfather to my grandmother Luna. So I am related twice to the Burris side through my grandmother Luna Burris Bevins. Luna’s husband Jonah Bevins Jr. was Lafayette’s great nephew, so they were related.
