Concerning your Burris's in Rowan County NC.
The 1820 Franklin Co. TN. census indexing shows this: Burrus, Samuel, Martin, Edward, Elijah, Hutson, and John.
I have in my line a Hutson Burrows (sp) Burris in a document when he was in the War of 1812 on a roster in Tenn spelled that way. He was in Walker County Ga. from about 1830 on. I am unable to get past him. He states that he was born in North Carolina(est, 1787).
I know he was associated with Anthony and Edward Burrus(sp)that ended up in Hamilton County Tenn. Edward and Anthony were brother's I am pretty sure because Edward witnessed Anthony's Will.
Anthony Burrows b.1770 or there abouts are: Edward Burrows, Thomas Burrows and John Burrows. I believe that these men are brothers.
Here is why I say this so follow along, Anthony, Edward, Thomas and John we know was in Pendleton Dist SC in 1800, In the 1790 Census for Pendleton Dist. there are listed the following; Edward Burris{sp} and John Burris {sp}. Now we know that the family has a history of naming thier kids after the grandfathers(usually) of the previous generations here is what supports my theories.
I have sent out tons of e-mails and have been looking at info for a while and there are certain names that commonly occur in this family. In the replies that I have gotten I have been given info tidbits and they match up here is what I have
From Mark Burris([email protected]) I got a letter that stated that he was looking for a John Burris born in 1785 in SC. He states that he traced John Burris to Franklin County Tenn to a tax list for 1811. He was m. to a Sarah (Sally) McDaniel and had 3 sons born in Franklin County Tn. William Henry Burris b.1/22/1819, James W. Burris b. 9/23/1820 and Charles M. Burris b 11/5/1824. That family moved from Tn to Tishimingo County MS in 1846 and then moved to Gonzales County Tx in 1856. John and Sarah then died in Tx after 1870.
Edward Burrows died in 1830 in Tn. He had listed his age in that census as 70 to 80 He was a witness to Anthony Burrows's will. He was also living in Tn in 1805 because his son James Edward was born in Tn. James
Edward named some of his sons, John Jackson Burrows b. 2/8/1825 in Hamilton County Tn, d.1837 believed in Walker County GA. Then James Edward had James Edward II b 1/24/1827 in Hamilton County. the next son he had was William Howard Burrows b. 1/22/1833 in Hamilton County, and then another son he named Anthony M. Burrows b. 5/30/1837 in Hamilton County Tn. Edward died in Hamilton County TN I believe.
Hutson Burrows was born in NC in about 1787 according to his stated age of 73 in the 1860 Walker County GA Census. He died in Walker County. Don't hold me to this but because of the tradition of naming children after fathers and uncles, I think that aWilliam Burrow(sp) Burris may be the father of Hutson because othe naming of his first son and then the pattern of naming his sons that follows; William Burrows b. 1813 in Hamilton County Tn, Anthony Burrows b. 1816 in Hamilton County Tn, John Edward Burrows b.1824 in
Hamilton County Tn (Hutson or Hudson also had at least 2 unamed daughters also),LeRoy Burrows b. 1826 in Walker County GA, Henry G. Burrows b 1829 in Walker County Ga and then either Arthur or Andrew ( the 1850 and 1860 census has conflicting names but I do find and Andrew in later censuses that seen to match age wise). Also Hutson's grandson William Commodore Burrows also carried the tradition of using the same name on by naming one of his sons Wiley W. Burrows.*
CaBurrows@ aol.com writes: Anthony Burrows was born in Surry County NC by all accounts in about 1775. He died in 1823 in Grundy County Tn. He named his sons James Burrows b. about 1800, John Burrows, b. about 1802, Thomas T. Burrows b. about1806, William Burrows b. about 1802(but not sure)
David Burrows b. 10/10/1810 in Franklin County TN, then he also had Russell Burrows d.before 1859, Anthony Burrows Jr b.about 1815 in Tn, John G. Burrows b 1817 in Tn, and Josiah Burrows b. 1820 in Tn.
From a posting in Genfourm in the Surry County NC list, Neil Davis looking for Thomas Burris(sp) born about 1775 in NC. He also states that the children of Thomas Burrows were Lee Hammond, John, George,Wiley Wesley Burris*. Wiley Wesley was also the name of the great Grandson of Hutson Burrows as I mentioned above.
I am pretty sure we are working the same pagejust need to realize that the spelling in not going to be consistant with the last name
