Joshua Burris(s)/Burress was known to have had "a younger brother," Solomon Burris of North Carolina, whose family kept in touch and descendants visited one of the Joshua Burriss reunions in S.C. around 1900. Solomon Burris' family is said to have kept the family Bible, and descendnats said that three brothers and their parents came from England (though I wonder if the actual bible states any places of birth). Does anyone know where this bible is today? Or at least an early transcription of it? Some say Joshua Burris was born in England, others say he was born in Germany but married in England. Joshua Burris (Sr) b. 13 May 1735 (in England or Germany? of in Virginia or N.C.?), d. 19 Oct 1783 Anson Co., N.C. He married 23 Sept 1756 (in Southampton, England, per the IGI record) to Elizabeth Brookshire, born 12 July 1734, died 3 March 1787 Anson Co, NC. The IGI record shows Elizabeth Brookshire was born (or should it say christened?) 12 July 1734 in Southampton, Hampshire, England, and married there 23 September 1756 to Joshua Burris. Was this information provided to the LDS by a descendant of Solomon Burris? I don't know if any records in Southampton show this marriage or her christening. But perhaps Joshua Burris married Elizabeth Brookshire in North Carolina? Some of the descendants of this Solomon Burris (1754-1845) said that Joshua Burris and Elizabeth Brookshire were the parents of: 1. Solomon Burris (who married Judith Taylor) of Surry Co., Anson Co., & Stanley Co., N.C., and 2. Joshua Burriss (Burress) of Hertford Co., Anson Co., & Bertie Co., who moved in the 1790s to Anderson Co., South Carolina, where he died January 1804. He was born about 1750-55, although some say 1724, apparently confusing him with his father. He married Sarah Chamblee. It may just be coincidence, but it's interesting that there was a Henry Burris Brookshire (b. 1861 Habersham Co., GA.) who d. 1948 in Pickens Co., S.C. He also had a brother Baylis Brookshire born 1857. They or their sisters were living in Greenville & Pickens Co., S.C. James Burris was on record in Bertie Co. by 1746 (possibly the James Burras there in 1741), and Joshua Burris was there by 1755. Hertford, N.C., 1768: Will of James Burruss: Probate granted to Easter Burruss, Joshua Burruss, and Joshua Burruss (Jr?) (Will missing). Perhaps James was a brother or father of Joshua Burris (Sr.).
