Descending from Benjamin BURR of Hartford, CT

Hello:

Greetings from a very distant cousin. I have reviewed pertinent pages of the 'General History of the Burr Family in America' by Charles Burr Todd. These types of genealogical references are gems, and it was a particular website that led me to the publication.

Briefly, our family descends from Benjamin Burr of Hartford Branch, Samuel(2), Jonathan(3), Nathaniel(4), Phebe(5). It is interesting that our family descends from the one person, Phebe Burr, who is only noted on the bottom of page 240 in an asteric reference in the aforementioned publication.

Phebe Burr m. Stephen B. Johnson [descending from Captain John Johnson] with reference to this page [notice her date of birth is in discrepancy, but parents make the link]:

We then desscend from their son No. 786. Nathaniel Johnson m. Rhoda Crowner:

I have seen Nathaniel and Rhoda's headstone which is located in the LaGrange Twp. Cemetery, LaGrange, Lorain County, Ohio. they are my ggg-grandparents. Also at rest in this same cemetery are my ggg-grandparents Benjamin & Lovisa (Rice) Sheldon. Both Benjamin Sheldon and Nathaniel Johnson are on a roster of pension applications for the state of NY in the War of 1812. Nathaniel's younger brother Nathan P. Johnson is also in this cemetery and was of polital popularity in addition to being an officer if the later part of the War.

Nathaniel & Rhoda (Crowner) Johnson had several children per the second link-reference above. Our famiy descends through their son Stephen Burr Johnson (1832 - 1906) and Emelia Crandall (1836 - 1896), [descending from Elder John Crandall of Rhode Island - another genealogical history]. Stephen and Emelia are interred in the Bosworth Cemetery, Walton Twp. (near Olivet), Eaton County, Michigan.

Sheldon Family Association, Inc., reference No. S6161 (W) Benjamin & Lovisa (Rice) Sheldon had 7 children, the first passing in infancy. We descend from their sixth child, S6161x6 David F. Sheldon (1829 - 1913) who married Adaline Crandall (1834 - 1924). Adaline and Emelia Crandall are both daughters of Kidder Crandall m. Polly Stevens of (Crandall) Mayflower descent -- through the referenced Elder John Crandall publication:

http://www.usgennet.org/usa/pa/county/lycoming/family_histories/crandall/index.html

David & Adaline (Crandall) Sheldon are also at rest in the Bosworth Cemetery.

My great-grandparents were Frank Milford Sheldon (1857 - 1935) and Addie Vera Johnson (1865 - 1917), first cousins through Crandall sisters. They are also interred in the Bosworth Cemetery. They had children Vernon Burr Sheldon and Edith Sheldon.

Vernon Burr Sheldon (1890 - 1927) was my grandfather, and he died from complications of diabetes while working on the Grand Trunk Railroad in 1927 in Valparaiso, Indiana, when my father Jack Sr. was only 1-1/2 years old. His second wife was Nellie Anne Page (her 3rd husband of 5!). My father was this couple's only living child, the first passing at birth, and he is still living with my mom here in Mesa, Arizona.

Vernon Burr Sheldon and his first wife are at rest in the Sheldon plots of the Bosworth Cemetery in Eaton County, Michigan.

My grandmother Nellie Anne (Page) Sheldon (burried "Nolan") (1890 - 1973) is at rest in the Mesa City Cemetery here in Mesa, Arizona. It was my grandmother that drew my parents to Arizona in 1971 to care for her in her later years and she passed away in 1973.

Born in the late 1950's in Clinton County, Michigan, I knew my grandmother fairly well before she died. After my grandfather Vernon's death, she separated us from our Sheldon family, but while at her gravesite in 1999 (no headstone then, but she has one now), she inspired me to uncover our ancestoral heritage and I've been working on it ever since.

We now also know the origin of my grandfather's middle name, BURR!

Best regards.

Sincerely,

Jack L. Sheldon, Jr., CPA
