Joy, was doing some research on Gloud and Margaret's desc. a couple years ago (was getting headaches so I've been on genealogy vacation) but I have in my file that you descended from the famous explorer Henry Hudson. Your xth g-grandmother being Mary, dau. of Ephraim (who died in Cherry Valley)....I've been doing a lot of reading last couple years, mainly old S.E. NY records and histories which is where I ran across the Hudson info. and a few Burnside blurbs. It's been so long since we've been in contact that I cannot remember where we left off so the following might be repeat information. EPHRAIM HUDSON (father of William Gloud Burnside's wife) Genealogical Records: New York, 1675-1920 Event: Lived in: 1776 County: Albany Comments: (Land Bounty Rights) 3rd Reg't Source: New York in the Revolution as Colony and State, Vol. I - Extracts Publisher: J. B. Lyon Co. Publication Information: Albany, NY, 1904 Page: 224 Province: New York He was a lieutenant in Col. Schuyler's regiment in 1781, and also served in Col. Henry Quackenbos' regiment of the Albany Militia. He is a direct descended of Richard Hudson (his gg-grandfather) who was born in London, England and died 1648 in India. Richard was the son of Henry Hudson III, The Explorer and Katherine. Henry III b. abt. 1565 London, England, died June 1611 in Hudson's Bay, Canada. Mary Hudson's brother, Judge Ephraim Jr. Hudson also married into same Burnside family,... sister to Mary's husband William Gloud Burnside. Her name was Hannah Burnside b. 16 Mar 1758. Being that these Hudsons were born in England, it wouldn't surprise me if some were Loyalists although 3 of Ephraim and Hannah's children died in New York (Cherry Valley & Watervliet) which blows that idea out the window, or at least 75% of it. However, there are Hudsons (born before Mary & Ephraim's father) that did settle in Canada. I think I was finding William Gloud Burnside son of Gloud & Margaret (who m. Mary Hudson) in early land records. According to our cousin (who was known by my branch of family) Gen. Sam S., William Gloud Burnside moved from Bethlehem Albany Co. to Canada, even though some of his desc. moved to Maryland, NY. The only descendants I have listed for Wm. Gloud Burnside & Mary Hudson are: William Burnside m.1 Ester m.2 Catherine Taylor Ephraim William Burnside b.1774 m. Elizabeth Patten Gloud Burnside b.1776 m. Maria Sager Catherine Burnside said to have married a Spencer of Otsego County, NY It would be interesting to learn more about Joseph Burnside son of William and his first wife Ester. Considering that William Gloud Burnside & Mary Hudson went to Canada it would make sense if the oldest son later moved there because in Ireland, it was always the oldest son to inherit all the land and money of the father regardless of being worthy (not that William wasn't), they just probably kept their native traditions in tact. I don't know anything about researching Canada but will have to learn since I believe my Native American roots can be found there. Have you been in contact with Brad Burnside? This is his line. I'm not sure how much progress he has made but could shed some light on this. I think we've been over all the census records in the past (identifying each person in each household?) for Bethlehem, Albany Co. Anyway, considering the Hudson history, it might be easier to track William by investigating the Hudson line in Canada since it might be well documented (?) Might find Hudson land, tax, and will documents that mention William or Mary which, God willing, may lead to even more. Notify Administrator about this message?
