I've just "uncovered" a little more on my James Burnside-- in case anyone has further thoughts--
I found him in the 1850 census in Bethlehem Town, Albany County, listed as James BURNES and in the 1860 census in Schodack Town, Rensselear Co, listed as John BURNSIDES.
I know I've got the right man in both cases as his wife's children by her first marriage are there (which is how I recognised him to begin win). His date of birth in these censuses appears to be 1809, rather than the 1807 on his death cert.
