Miller BURNSIDE/BURNSIDES and Maranda MASON, daughter of Henry and Margaret (TAYLOR) MASON, married in Fairfield Co., Ohio on 9 Sep. 1847. Miller is not found with the family in Violet Twp. on the 1870 Census, and on the 1880 Census (Violet Twp.) Maranda said that she was a widow, so presume Miller died between 1863 and 1870. Have not found cemetery records for either Miller or Maranda, however Maranda's death on 4 Jan 1881 in Violet Twp. is recorded in the Fairfield Co., OH Death Records.
Their first daughter, Hadessa/Hadassa C., was born about 1848. According to the Fairfield Co., OH Birth Records Vol. 1., Hadassa had a daughter named Vessa BURNSIDES born in July 1869 in Violet Twp. Hadassa BURNSIDE married Milton FORD on 25 Mar 1872 in Fairfield Co. and this is the last record I have for her. If Hester was a relative, I wonder if perhaps Milton and Hadassa moved to Illinois?
The next daughter was named Samarda Jane and, according to her death certificate, was born 16 Feb 1851. She was with Miller and Maranda on the 1860 Census, 10 years of age, but you do not show her. On the 1870 Census she was residing with her maternal grandmother Margaret MASON in Violet Twp. "Jane" BURNSIDES married Samuel Ezra RITTENHOUSE on 8 Mar 1871 (Franklin Co., OH Marriage Records), and they were the parents of 4 children: Clara, George W., Jonathan F., and Malissa/Melissa E. Samarda Jane died on 6 Apr 1929 in Pickerington. Her full name is on her death certificate, but only "Jane Rittenhouse" is found on her tombstone in Pickerington Cemetery.
Henry L. was born 3 Dec 1852 in Licking Co., OH according to his death certificate. He was also residing with his maternal grandmother in 1870. He moved to Hardin Co., OH where some other Burnside relatives were residing and married Millie GILMORE on 26 Aug 1880. They had a daughter named Floy Estella. Henry died on 15 Jan 1926 in Hardin Co., and is buried in Tymochtee Cemetery in Wyandot Co., OH.
Victoria A. was probably born in 1854, but the 1900 Census says Jan 1855. On the 1870 Census she was listed as Victory BURNSIDES working as a domestic servant in the household of Homer WILSON in Violet Twp. She married Charles A. KEMP on 11 Mar 1876 in Fairfield Co. In 1880 and 1900 Charles and Victoria were residing in Licking Co., OH. I have names for three of their four children: Arthur T., Ida N., and Earl Charles. No further record found in Ohio for Victoria, Charles, Arthur T. or Ida N.
According to the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census records, James C. was born about 1856, however the 1900 Census has Mar 1859 and his death certificated has 18 Mar 1859. In 1870 James was working as a farm laborer for Newton COLWELL in Violet Twp., and in 1880 he was with his mother working on the home farm. He married Catherine MACKLIN on 13 May 1882 in Henry Co., OH. James and Catherine were residing in Licking Co. OH in 1900, 1910 and 1920. James died 10 Sep 1928.
The only record I have for Tivis L. (Maranda had a brother named Henry Tivis) is the 1860 Census.
Albert H. BURNSIDE/BURNSIDES was born 9 July 1861 or 1862. He was residing with his mother, Maranda (MASON) BURNSIDE, in Violet Twp. in 1870 and 1880. He married Cynthia Alverdia BURWELL on 6 Nov 1886 in Henry Co., OH. They were residing in Damascus Twp., Henry Co., OH in 1900 and Bowling Green, Wood Co., OH in 1920. Their children were named: Burnel Webster, Flossie, James, Howard, Nettie Virginia, Arthur Cecil "Mike", and Karl Forest. Albert died on 18 Nov 1939 in Toledo, Lucas Co., OH.
Izora Ellen, daughter of Miller and Maranda BURNSIDE, was probably born 26 Sept 1863 or 1864. She was residing with her mother in Violet Twp. in 1870 and 1880. Izora E. BURNSIDE married Douglas STALEY on 1 Sep 1881 in Franklin Co., OH and they had 3 children: William D., Della and Grace May. Izora and Douglas divorced and Izora married her second husband, Eli LINDSAY, on 7 Oct 1899 in Licking Co., OH. After Eli's death in 1913, Izora married Ira O. GRANDSTAFF on 17 June 1915 in Licking Co. Izora died on 17 May 1940 in Newark, Licking Co., OH.
The 1870 Census lists a female child by the name of Lavesta J., one year old, and the 1880 Census has Lavesta, age 11, daughter of Maranda. However, I wonder if this child is the same person as Vessa, daughter of Hadassa. No further record.
This is a reply to Carmela, but I would like to exchange information with anyone interested in the descendants of Miller and Maranada BURNSIDE/BURNSIDES.
