Ambrose E Burnside, the General, was the son of Edgehill Burnside b 1790 Laurens District SC; who was the son of James Burnside (c 1754 Va- 1803 SC) and his wife Anna Edgehill; who was the son of James Burnside (1723-1798/99 SC) and his wife Martha Rodgers. James Sr (1723-1798/99) had only 2 sons who left male descendants, Andrew b 1762 and his older brother James. All Andrew's children lived in SC to begin with, and only two of James's sons moved North and stayed- Edgehill and his older brother Andrew b 1789, 2 other sons had moved North in 1813 but returned to the South ca 1816- James and Thomas E Burnside.
