The Period: 2nd half of 18th cent. The Place: Augusta Co. Va, and successor counties. The Line: John Burnside who died in 1809 and is buried at the Old Stone Church in Lewisburg, Greenbrier Co., W. Va. John's will is was recorded in Bath Co. Va. From it, it's clear that name of John's wife was Mary (Meary). Many have thought that she was Mary Walker, daughter of Alexander Walker of northeast Augusta Co. but it could not be proved beyond doubt. In June, at the DAR Library in Washington, DC I came upon a copy of an original document done in 1796 wherein the heirs (and spouses of heirs) of Alexander Walker, who died in 1774, formally relinquish all claims to a chunk of real estate in favor of John, son of Alexr. Among the signers were Mary and John Burnside. This should be proof beyond doubt that John's wife, Mary, was daughter of Alexander. During the same expedition I found a headstone at the Augusta Stone Church (until the 1770s the Stone Meeting House) in Fort Defiance, Va., for Alexander Walker, father of Mary. The stone was a government issue stone (by the Commonwealth of Virginia or the U.S. Govt.) done in last half of 20th cnetury. Alexander's birth date was given as 1718 -- different from what is often seen, and his death date as 1774, which has been the accepted date, based on his will etc. The stone also said that Alexr had served in the Virginia Militia from 1756 to 1758, during the French and Indian War. Thus it is most probable that he was the Alexander Walker, who with a John Burnside, recorded on the roster of Capt. Allen's Company in Aug. 1756. The stone is in the older of two cemeteries attached to the Augusta Stone Church. It is not recorded in any existing readings of the church cemeteries, which I have seen. I hope that people interested in the John Burnside line will note and comment on this message. Terry Burnside.
