I am trying to straighten out some mysteries regarding the wife of Joseph Allen of East Windsor, Connecticut (1727-1808), of the Samuel Allen line. She was allegedly the daughter of Captain Michael Burnham of Hartford and Middletown, Connecticut. The identity of Capt. Michael's wife poses as much of a problem.
Allen line is Joseph Allen b 4 Sep 1727, died 8 Oct 1808, born lived and died in East Windsor, Connecticut. Son of Joseph Allen and Mary Hulet. Samuel Allen and Hannah Burroughs, John Allen and Mary Hannum, Samuel Allen and Ann Whitmore.
Captain Michael Burnham was the son of Richard Burnham, son of Thomas Burnham, who settled in Hartford - atleast allegedly.
Here are my mysteries, and what I have on them. I need to know what actual evidence there is that Joseph Allen even married Lois Burnham and who she might have been. The published genealogies cite no sources, and it appears to be impossible that she was a daughter of Captain Michael Burnham of Hartford and Middletown. There are further problems with teh identity of Captain Michael's wife.
First problem. According to alot of
sources, some of them published in books and journal form, and some online,
not one of which gives a single source of its information, Joseph Allen,
born in 1727, married in East Hartford or Middletown, Connecticut on 17 Jul
1750, Lois Burnham, the daughter of Captain Michael and Lois (Wise) Burnham.
Lois is occasionally attributed vaguely online to John and Catherine Wise.
Who they may have been there is no clue. However, multiple published
genealogies state that Lois Wise and Michael Burnham married on Sept 15,
1728, and that Lois Wise was born in Hartford or Middletown on July 12,
1703. That's 1703. (Orrin Allen's Samuel Allen genealogy, and Willard
Allen's Samuel Alen of Windsor, CT and some descendants, article, NEHGR,
1876, p 452.)
From the Barbour Collection indexes at Ancestry.com we get:

That's 1753.
Lois Wise married Michael Burnham on Sept 15, 1728. Vol 2, p 236.
Either the information Ancestry.com has from the Barbour Collection, or the
information in the Barbour Collection itself, is transcribed wrong, or Lois
Wise who married Michael Burnham has been misidentified and the girl born on
July 12 1753 was someone else - and learning who Lois Wise who married
Michael Burnham really was would be REALLY helpful.
I found some evidence, including the published Wentworth genealogy,
of a John Wise and Catherine Wentworth who really
married about 1751, in Lebanon, unclear if it's the same couple. The
marriage entry in the Barbour collection has neither her last name, nor the
date. (Lebanon VR Vols 1 and 2, 1700 - 1854; vol 1, p 345) They had
a number of children born in Lebanon beginning just after 1751.
However, a couple who married in 1751 are not the parents of a girl
who married in 1750.
Need to check in original town records, for the missing information and if
date unreadable, dates before and after that entry.
I am an NEHGS member. My current member number is 183795, and last year's,
which is still my password, is 381470.
Next mystery.
Michael Burnham and Lois Whoevershewas allegedly had two daughters named
Lois, who are handled differently in the different published genealogies.
All of their children were allegedly born in Hartford or East Hartford.
Lois Burnham, born born Feb 23, 1729, variously died in 1730 and married
Joseph Allen, on 17 Jan 1755, I don't have a place but probably Hartford or
East Hartford, possibly in Middletown. I can't find anything in NEHGS's
and ancestry.com's various scattered incomplete vital records from Hartford,
Connecticut, that confirms that she died, though I did find other children
listed as both being born and dying.
Lois Burnham born Aug 22, 1742, married at Hartford, Richard Nichols, on
July 19, 1761. Notice it is unlikely that she married in 1755. The
entries at Ancestry.com from teh Barbour Collection are outright strange.
Both are from Middletown Vital Records, 1651-1854.

I am trying to imagine the actual entry in the town records including her
date of birth, it simply wasn't done.
Neither the birth nor the death of Lois born in 1729 is listed here.
The birth of Lois born in 1729 is found at NEHGS, in the Historical
Catalogue of the First Church of Hartford, Connecticut 1633-1885.
It says 1728/29 Feb 23 Lois, daughter to Michael Burnham. (Doesn't name his wife)
It also lists the birth of Lois the second;
1742. Aug 22 Lois ye daughter of Michal Burnham.
It also lists the death fo Lois Burnham wife of Michal on 5 Mar 1749.
Colonial Families of LI, NY and CT, Herbert Furman Silversmith, Michael had a daughter Lois, died young, and Lois who married Richard Nichols.
Roderick Burnham's Genealogical Records of Thomas Burnham the Emigrant says Capt. Michael had Lois bap Feb 23?, 1729, died Feb 13, 1730. Then he had Lois born Aug 22, 1742, she married Aug 22, 1750, Richard Nichols, and died Dec 6, 1805. Dec 6 1805 is the date Lois the wife of Joseph Allen died. The two seem to be hopelessly mixed up.
Is there any record anywhere of Lois the First dying on Feb 13, 1730? I haven't found such a thing. Had to have been in Windsor or Hartford.
It also says, "Capt. James, son of Capt Michael Burnham, died at New London, Conn., of small-pox, June 1, 1759, at 26 years. He mentions in his verbal will of May 30, 1759, his two brothers as being able to take care of themselves, but to his ONLY sister, being fatherless and motherless, he made a "Device" in the following words, viz: "That after all my just debts be paid out of my estate I give to my sister, Lois Burnham, and that s estate be put into the hands of Mr. Philip Mortimer of Mdidletown, for her education and benefit", etc.
This sounds as if the firstborn Lois did indeed die, and Joseph Allen must have married someone else.
Third mystery.

Who did Joseph Allen really marry? I have no confirmation
from what I could find at ancestry.com or newenglandancestors.org
that he married anyone - but he and his wife had children and I'm a direct descendant.
Marriage allegedly occurred 17 Jul 1750, or 17 Jan 1755. It allegedly occurred in East Hartford, and allegedly he was born, lived and died in East Windsor.

Richard Burnham, ca. 1654-1731, Hartford, Conn. Sources differ as to whether his granddaughter Lois Burnham, bp. 1729 [#129] died young, or m. Joseph Allen. A younger sister, another Lois, b. 1742, m. Richard Nichols. Very possibly #516-17 and #258-59 should be removed.
Capt. Michael Burnham was a wealthy and prominent man, with lengthy probate. If Joseph Allen were his son in law it should be reflected in these documents - or in his wife's.
Lois Burnham died 5 Mar 1749 at Hartford.
Capt. Michael Burnham died 30 Nov 1758 at Middletown.
Marriage of Joseph Allen and Lois Burnham was 17 Jul 1750, allegedly in East Hartford. It wouldn't show up in Lois's probate.
Capt. Michael Burnham's inventory of estate was dated Feb 28, 1759. The genealogy does not say if he left a will.
He had a son, James, above, whose will mentioned an only sister Lois the Younger, he died June 1, 1759, and the inventory of his estate is dated Apr 7, 1760. It also mentions that in 1765, Philip Mortimer as guardian to Lois Burnham, turned over the entrie estate of her brother, Capt. James Burnham to Richard and Lois (Burnham) Ncihols, both of Middletown, Connecticut.
Capt. Michael Burnham married again; Hannah Sage (not her maiden name), Jan 31, 1750, at Middletown, (Barbour, Vol 2, p 236), and she died March 15, 1762 (same source). Conceivably she mentioned his children. They had none of their own, though this was not her first marriage. I notice however, that alleged daughter Lois married almost promptly after her alleged father remarried. She was allegedly his eldest child.
