Debbie, first let me comment on a few things in your message. I corresponded with Carroll Buttrill some years ago when I was most actively searching this family; he was very friendly and helpful. Cecil Burney, on the other hand, a lawyer in the Corpus Christi area, who has published on the Hollands in a historical quarterly, would never answer any letters I sent to him. Just lately I have revived my interest because I noticed that the Harris line is the only one I have not taken to my ggg-grandparent's generation (I think I must be a generation older than you). I know Winford Harris's father's name but not beyond that. I have thought about, and been encouraged to join the DRT, but when I attended meetings years ago, the ladies were embroiled in a fight with another chapter and I decided I wasn't interested in being part of that; now lately I had again decided to join (I have now retired) and again there is a big internal fight in the DRT, so I am again turned off! Dr. Ansley was a physician (ob-gyn I think) practicing in Lubbock, and the son (I think) of Edna Buttrill Ansley, the one who wrote the obit in the Farm News (which contains a few errors). Every scrape of information may help, so I was glad to hear that Susan was 17 before she came back to Texas--that would have been about 1861. Of course, he was wrong about when she married, so everything must be evaluated. And I mis-spoke when I said they married in 1865--of course it was 1864, because Wintford's first letters were in early January 1865. You will enjoy seeing these letters, which I really need to publish. I know the story of Winford Harris being the first white child born in Austin. I have always been somewhat dubious, but having just checked the Handbook of Texas Online, I see that it is possible, Austin having been established in 1839. I never heard of his father William owning property there, but that will be a new line of research for me. I thought perhaps the original story was that he was born in the state capital, but that would have been Washington-on-the-Brazos, which is closer to Madison Counties where they ended up. I was mistaken about the picture I mentioned. The Buttrills and the Harrises got very mixed up for several generations there and I get them confused. The picture I have is of Winford Eugene Harris, known as Gene, who was sheriff in Abilene. He was the son of Winford and Susan, and my grandmother's brother. I have a number of things you would probably like to have a copy of. I should have put my genealogy online already, but I was a librarian, and I am a stickler for sources. It would take a long time for me to get it all ready to publish online, and I've must never done it. The best way I can think of for us to make contact is for you to call phone information and ask for William & Sandra Kurtin in San Antonio. My last name is rare, so it will be easy for you to call me. I look forward to hearing from you. Sandra
