Well, hello Cousin Sandra!

I am descended through William and Susannah Holland Burney's daughter Nancy Burney Buttrill. Nancy was my gg-grandmother.

You are correct that William and Susannah Burney died prior to 1850. Some think that Susannah lived to be almost 100 years old, but that is incorrect. I have estate papers for William and a mention in one of them that they had both passed.

There is a family history for the Buttrill line, "The Buttrill Family" written by Carroll O. Buttrill which states in page 125 the following:

"William and Susannah Holland Burney were parents of Nancy and Susan Burney. Dr. Ansley [I do not know who this is. D] says that Susan Burney was stolen by the Mormans and lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, until age 17. She was 34 years old when she was married.
Dr. Ansley has passed along the story about Wint Harris being the first white child born in Austin, Texas. An undated clipping from "The Farm News," published in Marion, Indiana, and found in the leaves of Tapley Buttrill's Bible, confirms the date and adds other details about the lives of Wint and Susan Burney Harris. Edna Buttrill Ansley of Marathon in Brewster County, Texas, a daughter of Tapley and Amanda Harris Buttrill, wrote the article. It states:
My grandfather, Wint Harris, was born at Austin, Texas, July 6, 1840.

When a small boy he moved with his parents to Madison County, staying there until the Civil War started, when he joined the Confederate Army and went through all the hardships of a soldier's life. At the close of the was, Dec. 1, 1864, he was married to Miss Susan Burney of Madison County. Five children were born to their union. They he and his family moved to Lampasas County near Lometa, living there twenty-three years, when they moved to Eastland County, near Cisco, living there a number of years.
Grandmother died Nov. 10, 1916. After her death grandfather lived with his children. He was a true Christian, having joined the Methodist Church, South when quite young. Like many others in those days, he did not get an education, but he enjoyed hearing the Bible; also The Farm News read. He was a susscriber to The Farm News for thirty years.
On March 6, 1922, he departed this life. He left a son, two daughters, thriteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren to mourn his death."

Another paragraph:
The second wife of Tapley Buttrill was his first cousin, Amanda Eudora Harris, daughter of Wintfred and Susan Burney Harris. Wintfred, whose name appears under several spellings, including Winfred, Winford, and Wintford, but most often as Wint, was the first white child born in Austin, Texas, after its selection by the Texas Congress to be the capital of the new nation. He was born on 6 July, 1840. His father was a major landowner in part of what became downtown Austin.

The little blurb of Susan being stolen by Mormons has fascinated me. It is one of those tantalizing tidbits that you just never forget. And here is the answer out of the blue! Good for her that she escaped but I bet that quilt box got mighty hot!

Are you here in Texas? And do you by any chance have a copy of the Tapley Eugene Asa Buttrill family bible? Tapley married Wint and Susan Burney Harris' daughter, Amanda Eudora. I very much would like to get a copy of that bible.

I would love to read the letters that Wint sent to her. And see the pictures even though we may not know who they are. I am in the DFW area. If you are close perhaps we could meet and share info.

I'm so glad you posted to the forum,
Debbie Miranda
