I've just returned from Jefferson Co, WV, formerly Berkeley Co, VA (now WV).Your Mary Burnett may be a grandaughter of George Burnett, b. circa 1770, d. Feb, 1815, in what is now Jefferson Co, WV.If not George, could be William, his brother, b. circa 1772, d. Feb, 1815, also in Jefferson Co, WV.George Burnett married Sarah (or Sara) Douglass.I haven't located who William Burnett married, but I learned that many county records, including marriages were lost when the county records were sent to Lexington during the Civil War for safe keeping.Seems many records were missing when they were returned to Jefferson County after the War.I do have the following:Farmers' repository.Died- On Friday, Mr. William Burnett, of Jefferson County, Va. (now in W.Va.). (p. 3, c. 1)Published on Thursday, February 9, 1815.Library of Virginia Film 322.Married- On Friday, September 20, by Rev. Seely Bunn, Mr. Robert L. Young, to Miss Mary Burnett, both of Charles-Town, Va. (now in W.Va.). (p. 3, c. 4)Published Wednesday, September 25, 1816.(Library of Virginia Film 322).Married- On Tuesday, May 17, by Rev. Monroe, Capt. Sylvanus G. Moler, to Miss Hannah T. Burnett, both of Jefferson County, Va. (now W.Va.). (p. 3, c. 1)Pub. Thursday, May 19, 1831.Library of Virginia Film 417, Bernard J. Henley.
Married- On December 25, by Rev. Robbins, Mr. Joseph M'Cartney, to Miss Matilda Gill, both of Charles-Town, Va. (now in W.Va.). (p. 2, c. 4) PUB.Thursday, December 29, 1814.Available on microfilm (Library of Virginia Film 322).Virginia free press (Charles Town, W. Va.) Married- On Wednesday, Dec. 4, 1834, Eli Smith, to Miss Sarah Gill, daughter of Thomas Gill, of Berkeley County, Va. (now W.Va.). (p. 3, c. 4) Thursday, January 1, 1835.Available on microfilm (Library of Virginia Film 417). Virginia free press (Charles Town, W. Va.)Married- On Thursday, Sept. 14, by Rev. Theodore W. Simpson, Joseph Keesee, of Shepherdstown, Va. (now W. Va.), to Miss Mary Jane Gill, of Smithfield, Va. (now W. Va.). (p. 3, c. 3)Thursday, September 21, 1837.Available on microfilm (Library of Virginia Film 417).
George and William's parents were Alexander and Catherine (Hardin) Burnett.Alexander died in 1805, I have his Will and lots of other records. They lived on the Shenandoah River near Keyes Gap.Catherine moved to KY after Alexander's death and remarried a Mr. Jones.I don't know who all George and William's children were.
Check the children's names of your Mary Burnett, it may give a clue to her [email protected]
