Josiah Burley, d. Aurora IL 1892

Reminiscences of Men Who Have Lived in St. Charles.
Josiah H. Burley.
Here was another quiet, hard working man, who for many years pushed the saw and plane as a carpenter in and around St. Charles. He resided on West Second street, next south of the present home of Dr. W. H. Bishop, his old place being, the last I knew, the residence of J. F. Jordan and family. Mr. Burley was always at work, and very neat he was about it. His premises were good to look upon, so trim and clean did he keep them. His shop was for many years in the upper part of the building just in the rear of the livery stable, corner of Main and West Second streets, though for a time it was also on his own lot.
Mr. Burley was a member of Captain Bowman's company of the 52nd Illinois Infantry, during part of the civil war, but received a wound in the head which brought his discharge. He removed with his family to Aurora nearly twenty years ago, and died in that city January 12, 1892. He was a member of Aurora post No. 20 G.A.R. His wife has also long since gone to her final home. One daughter, Lina, now Mrs. B. T. Emigh, now resides in Aurora. Another, Mrs. Estelle Griffin, lives, I believe, at Oak Park, and the son, Elbridge, is in business in Chicago. Mrs. Emigh, before her marriage, was a valued teacher in the west side school at St. Charles.
