Burkitt to Burkett Change
This is just in hopes that someone may have stumbled across a reason for the change. Especially as related to the family in south central Illinois. Maybe some of the following dates will help someone.
My Grandfather was born in 1897 and was a Burkitt and even as late as 1916 when he was married (still Burkitt on the marriage certificate). My Dad (born 1921) only ever knew to spell it Burkett. So apparently in the span between 1916 and the time my Dad was taught to spell his name, something happened.
I have heard some stories (e.g. married to a Burke) with the change but cannot see how that would relate to my Grandfather.
I have a piece of paper my Grandmother had written some "Birthdays" on. Since these were bithdays not birth/death, it would have been written pre-1926. She has my g Grandfather as "Burkitt" and initially wrote my Grandfather's name as "Burkett" then wrote an "i" over the "e" even she was confused.
Any leads would be very much appreciated.
