Mark: Thank you for clearing Kemp. The 1820 Rockingham County census listed four heads of households with white male(s) under age ten. Thomas B. (my ggggrandfather)was born in Rockingham County January 1811. Names include: C. John, John, Robert Jr. (137-683), and Kemp. Culpepper County census earlier carried Robert Sr. and Kemp on census roles. My gggrandfather (Robert Sanford)had four sons (Joseph,M. Thomas, Laurel (my grandfather), Harry (my namesake). Joseph had two sons (Robert & Harley). Robert had a son (Robert). C. John was reported to have had four daughters marry Burkholders.
Knox County, Ohio history writes: Thomas B.did not agree with slaveholding and removed to Ohio Military lands in 1834 with wife Suzannah Burkholder and son Jacob. Robert Sr. and C. John were the only census listed Gaines' slave owners in 1820 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Harry
