Betty,
your posting was 6 years ago, so I hope you are still watching this forum.
My great grandmother was a descendant of Burgess Phelps. There are two "history" books of Phelps in some of the better genealogy libraries tha would give a good lineage for you.
Burgess was the eldest son of John Phelps of VA who died in 1775 I think.I'm doing all this from memory without consulting my notes, so I may not have all the dates right.John was a Lt. Col. in the Bedford County militia and was in several battles against indians. He was the first representative from Bedford Co. to the House of Burgesses. John also had a son named John who was a Lt. in the Rev War.
Some of the sources also believe that Burgess was named after his mother's(Mary Burgess)family.Burgess did live in Lincoln Co. NC.I believe that he joined a NC regiment during first months of the Rev War that was formed to protect the NC northern border. The regiment was later ordered to VA and most of the men deserted with the blessing of the officers, most of whom resigned.Few, if any records were kept of the regiment. My sources state that some of the regiment did stay and fight.
Some years later, Burgess was granted a veteran's land grant in KY.The location was among VA veterans who were with George Rogers Clark & the Vincennes expedition.
I don't have any written records of John marrying Mary Burgess, or who Burgess married.Other than the land grant, I don't have any record of his Rev War service.
I would be glad to exchange sources.
