This is from the LaCygne Journal dated June 1, 1878:
Rev. Vardry Burgess, of this township, who died on Friday of last week, was buried Sunday morning in the cemetery northwest of LaCygne. The obsequies were attended with Masonic ceremonies, the lodge of this city having charge of the burial.

At a special communication of LaCynge Lodge No. 61, A., F., and A. M., convened to attend the funeral of Rev. Vardy Burgess, May 26, 1878, the following resolutions were adopted.........
(If the funeral and burial were the same day, his death would have been on May 24, 1878.)
