I haven't yet seen any genealogical research that has successfully linked a specific Burgess male who was living in North America prior to the American Revolution with a specific British ancestor. The closest anyone has come, at least in my estimation, is with Col. William Burgess of Anne Arundel Co., Maryland, who has been successfully tied to a contemporaneous Burgess man living in Wiltshire--but Col. William's father is still unknown and unproven, at least to my satisfaction.

We've managed to link a few American families genetically with their British cousins through the Burgess DNA Project--although I need to emphasize that finding the common ancestor of both families is always difficult, because many early British Burgess lines can't be proved much earlier than 1750-1800 (about the same as American families).

The Burke Co. NC Burgess family isn't currently represented in the DNA Project--I think!--however, we may already have offshoots of this major early line present that can't currently be tied to their earliest progenitor in North America. As an example, we recently matched our first known descendant of Joel Burgess of Laurens Co., SC with three other Burgess families already in the Project; Joel may be the common ancestor.

I think you mentioned a Matthew Burgess in your previous post. That's a pretty uncommon given name for this period. I think one of the Matthews in this family MAY be the ancestor of two of the Rutherford Co. NC and Union Co. SC Burgess lines in the Project; we have samples from several other lines from this general region also represented in the Project with their own distinct genetic signatures--one of these is related to Thomas Burgess of Pittsylvania Co., VA.

That doesn't really answer your question very well, but it's at least realistic. I really do think, though, that the more samples we get in the Burgess DNA Project, the more links we're going to make! Not every sample immediately matches someone else, but many do eventually. I'm in the process of updating the Burgess DNA Project website, at www.millefleurs.tv, under the "Burgess Genealogy" link--and I'll announce the revision here when it's ready. It should be up sometime in August.

I can tell you that it'll include a major revision and upgrading of the entry for Thomas Burgess of Orange and Pittsylvania Cos., VA. I've been working on this line for three weeks now, and I think I finally have some basic idea of how these families are structured. I'll enjoy having my theories picked apart by all the other genealogists out there--if you can!

All best:

Michael Burgess
